  • Author : Phillip Dennis Cate
  • Publisher : Ben Uri Gallery & Museum
  • Release : 2000
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Prints Abound written by Phillip Dennis Cate and published by Ben Uri Gallery & Museum. This book was released on 2000 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Printmaking exploded with creative energy at the end of the nineteenth century in France. Artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gauguin and Odilon Redon were at the forefront of the avant-garde movement to reinvigorate the applied arts through colour printmaking.Prints Abound probes the phenomenal outpouring of print publications in late nineteenth-century France. Exploring the artistic, technical, economic, commercial and cultural circumstances of 1890s Paris, Prints Abound reaches a fuller understanding of Art Nouveau, which emphasised the fusion of exquisite design with the everyday. The achievements of Bonnard are stressed and his work is represented in depth, with spirited posters, contributions to solo and collective portfolios, designs for music primers and illustrated books, and an outstanding four-panel folding screen of a fashionable street scene in fin-de-siècle Paris.Phillip Dennis Cate, Director of the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University, has written the introduction and a text on illustrated books; Richard Thomson, Chair of the Art History Department at the University of Edinburgh, discusses single-artist print albums; and Gale B. Murray, Chair of the Art History Department at Colorado College, considers music illustration.Prints Abound will be fascinating reading for print collectors and dealers, art historians and all those with an interest in this important period of French culture.

Book Degas Sickert and Toulouse Lautrec

Download or read book Degas Sickert and Toulouse Lautrec written by Anna Gruetzner Robins and published by Tate. This book was released on 2005 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Between 1870 and 1910 the burgeoning populations and hectic speed of life in London and Paris fascinated artists on both sides of the English Channel. French artists such as Edgar Degas and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec pioneered new ways of representing city life, profoundly influencing many British artists." "This publication examines the exciting and controversial exchange of pictorial and aesthetic ideas that took place as British art adapted to modernity, and explores the rich interplay between the making, exhibiting and collecting of new figurative art." "The pivotal figures in this cross-cultural dialogue are Degas, hailed in Britain as a genius; Sickert, whose Degas-inspired art explored the gritty, urban side of modern life; and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, whose largest one-man show was staged in Regent Street, London. Works by these and other key artists, including Vuillard, Bonnard, Tissot, Whistler, Steer and Rothenstein, involved society portraiture and posters, scenes of the street and public entertainment, creating evocative images of the decadence and spectacle of the fin-de-siecle metropolis."--BOOK JACKET.

  • ISBN : 1134876858

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1983 the first edition rapidly established itself as a core student text. Now fully revised and up-dated it remains the only book to address the rationale, process, techniques and methodologies specific to the study of dance history. For the main body of the text which covers historical studies of dance in its traditional and performance contexts, the editors have brought together a team of internationally known dance historians. Roger Copeland and Deborah Jowitt each take a controversial look at the modern American dance. Kenneth Archer and Millicent Hodson explain the processes they use when reconstructing 'lost' ballets, and Theresa Buckland and Georgina Gore write on traditional dance in England and West Africa respectively. With other contributions on social dance, ballet, early European modern dance and feminist perspectives on dance history this book offers a multitude of starting points for studying dance history as well as presenting examples of dance writing at its very best. Dance History will be an essential purchase for all students of dance.

Book Decadent Enchantments

    Book Details:
  • Author : Katherine Bergeron
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2023-04-28
  • ISBN : 0520919610
  • Pages : 366 pages

Download or read book Decadent Enchantments written by Katherine Bergeron and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oldest written tradition of European music, the art we know as Gregorian chant, is seen from an entirely new perspective in Katherine Bergeron's engaging and literate study. Bergeron traces the history of the Gregorian revival from its Romantic origins in a community of French monks at Solesmes, whose founder hoped to rebuild the moral foundation of French culture on the ruins of the Benedictine order. She draws out the parallels between this longing for a lost liturgy and the postrevolutionary quest for lost monuments that fueled the French Gothic revival, a quest that produced the modern concept of "restoration." Bergeron follows the technological development of the Gregorian restoration over a seventy-year period as it passed from the private performances of a monastic choir into the public commodities of printed books, photographs, and Gramophone records. She discusses such issues as architectural restoration, the modern history of typography, the uncanny power of the photographic image, and the authority of recorded sound. She also shows the extent to which different media shaped the modern image of the ancient repertory, an image that gave rise to conflicting notions not only of musical performance but of the very idea of music history.
