Book Letters from the North Catholic Missionaries in Scandinavia 817 905 AD

This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of eleven relatively brief documents, mostly of papal origin, which deal with the establishment of the church in Scandinavia. They deal with the establishment of the mission at Hamburg, under Imperial protection, and the attempt to extend this mission diocese into the untamed lands of Sweden and Denmark. While the Christianization of the Nordic countries begins under this period, it will not be fully realized for another century when the centralized monarchies of these nations adopted the cross and accepted baptism themselves.

Download or read book Letters to Churches written by Jenny Baker and published by Spring Harvest Publishing. This book was released on 2002-10 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seven churches of the book of Revelation each got mail from Jesus. These letters outlined their weaknesses and their strengths, and also encouraged them in their trials. These churches saw themselves through God's eyes; saw what made Him glad and what made Him angry. And now we've got mail too. Letters to the Churches is based on the 2002 Spring Harvest theme You've Got Mail, and can be used in conjunction with the 2002 Study Guide. It covers material on Revelation chapters 1, 2 and 3 and encourages small groups and individuals to put their faith into action. Containing material and ideas for eight sessions, each study focuses on one subject, which is split into different sections for easy access. From aims to application, the studies make use of relevant and recent media which help to ground the Bible study within contemporary bounds. Letters to the Churches applies the words of Jesus Christ to today's church, and shows how it can shape and challenge us, giving us a new sense of purpose and direction for life.

Book The Scandinavian Reformation

Download or read book The Scandinavian Reformation written by Ole Peter Grell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Martin Luther's protest began making an impact in Scandinavia in the 1520s, this region belonged to the religious and political periphery of Europe. A century later the Nordic countries had become of paramount importance to European Protestantism, and it was the intervention of Lutheran Scandinavia in the Thirty Years' War which helped secure the survival of European Protestantism. This volume describes how the Nordic countries came to be solidly Lutheran states by the early seventeenth century; how the evangelical movements differed and succeeded, and the different pace of reform and its institutionalisation. It offers a revisionist view of the role of the Catholic Church in Scandinavia, and its attempts to halt the reformation, and demonstrates the difficulties facing the new Lutheran churches trying to convert a conservative, peasant population to Protestantism.

Book German and Scandinavian Protestantism 1700 1918

Download or read book German and Scandinavian Protestantism 1700 1918 written by Nicholas Hope and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first history in English of the Lutheran Church in Germany and Scandinavia in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A period of fundamental and lasting change in the political landscape with the separation of the old twin monarchies of Sweden-Finland and Denmark-Norway inScandinavia (1808, 1814), and the unification of Germany (1866-71), this was also a time of particular unease and upheaval for the church. Attempts to emulate the spiritual community of the early church, reform of the church establishment, and steps taken to enlighten parishioners were almost alwaysheld back by the anomalous structural legacy of the Reformation, tradition, and parish habit, sacred and profane. However, the birth of the modern nation-state and its market economy posed a fundamental challenge to the structure and ethos of the Reformation churches, as it did to the CatholicChurch. The First World War deepened the crisis further: German Protestants (and the Scandinavians were not immune either, although they remained neutral), who bracketed modernity with crisis and religion with national renewal, and who saw national loyalty as a higher value than the faith, fellowship, and moral order of the church, were swept up into the maw of a modern national war machine which threatened to wipe out Protestantism altogether.
