Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Matthew Arnold, Vol. 1: 1848-1888, Collected and Arranged Qualified by nature and training for the highest honours and successes which the world can give, he spent his life in a long round of unremunerative drudgery, working even beyond the limits of his strength for those whom he loved, and never by word or sign betraying even a consciousness of that dull indifference to his gifts and services which stirred the fruitless indignation of his friends. His theology, once the subject of some just criticism, seems now a matter of comparatively little moment; for, indeed, his nature was essentially religious. He was loyal to truth as he knew it, loved the light and sought it earnestly, and by his daily and hourly practice gave sweet and winning illustration of his own doctrine that conduct is three-fourths of human life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Matthew Arnold, Vol. 2: 1848 1888, Collected and Arranged MY dear conington - Many thanks for your ready kindness - kindness such as you have always been prompt to show me. I leave Paris to-night for Italy, but I cannot go away without a word of thanks to you. Piles of exercise-books are sent to me to look through, and I wish you could see them with me. The Latin verse is certainly very good; but it is clear that Latin and Greek are cultivated almost entirely with a view to giving the pupil a mastery over his own language a mastery which has always been the great object of intel lectual ambition here, and which counts for more than a like mastery does with us. Perhaps, because it does not count for so much with us, a like mastery is, in fact, scarcely ever attained in England - certainly never at school. Book The Letters of Matthew Arnold 1860 1865

Download or read book The Letters of Matthew Arnold 1860 1865 written by Matthew Arnold and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University Press of Virginia edition of The Letters of Matthew Arnold, edited by Cecil Y. Lang, represents the most comprehensive and assiduously annotated collection of Arnold's correspondence available. When complete in six volumes, this edition will include close to four thousand letters, nearly five times the number in G.W.E. Russell's two-volume compilation of 1895. The letters, at once meaty and delightful, appear with a consecutiveness rare in such editions, and they contain a great deal of new information, both personal (sometimes intimate) and professional. Two new diaries are included, a handful of letters to Matthew Arnold, and many of his own that will appear in their entirety here for the first time. Renowned as a poet and critic, Arnold will be celebrated now as a letter writer. Nowhere else is Arnold's appreciation of life and literature so extravagantly evident as in his correspondence. His letters amplify the dark vision of his own verse, as well as the moral background of his criticism. As Cecil Lang writes, the letters "may well be the finest portrait of an age and of a person, representing the main movements of mind and of events of nearly half a century and at the same time revealing the intimate life of the participant-observer, in any collection of letters in the nineteenth century, possibly in existence." Volume 2 covers the years of Arnold's emergence as a critic. During this period, he consolidated his reputation with Essays in Criticism, notably the influential article, "The Function of Criticism at the Present Time." In 1865, in Europe on an official school study, he records his impressions with his usual keen observations of nature within and nature without. His letters to friends (old and new, at home and abroad), to politicians and theologians continue to display an unhurried, unfailing intellect. Writing to his mother and other members of his family, he exhibits a warm, witty, and always observant devotion to his wife, Flu, and young son, Tom, who often accompany him on his travels in England.

Book Select Poems of Matthew Arnold Classic Reprint

Download or read book Select Poems of Matthew Arnold Classic Reprint written by Edward Everett Hale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Poems of Matthew Arnold Matthew arnold was born at Laleham, on the Thames, in the county of Middlesex, December 24, r 822. He was the son of Thomas Arnold, who had begun prae tical life, as we may call it, on leaving Oxford, by taking private pupils. The father is famous now as Headmaster of Rugby, a man of most powerful and influential life in education, and in religion as well, whom his son always remembered with affection, though he followed a life or (more important) a line of thought very different from Thomas Arnold's. He was one of a large family who were closely bound together by great affection through life, so that the real view we have of Arnold's personal life is gained almost entirely from letters either to his mother, or his sisters, and, of course, to his wife. The influence of childhood amounted to much with Arnold, for, though the family soon left Laleham for Rugby (which is not a very attractive place), yet vacations were spent at Fox How in Westmoreland, of which Dr. Arnold was devotedly fond, where Matthew learned to know the Lake Country and Wordsworth - two very strong elements in forming his life and his poetry.
