Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. • Author : Maria Lancellotti
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2015-08-24
  • ISBN : 9004295976
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Attis written by Maria Lancellotti and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the figure of Attis. The work aims to reconsider the mythical and cultic information about this character, trying to provide proof of the processes of "construction" and "reconstruction" that have contributed to the moulding of the different forms of Attis that developed as a result of various demands within different religious traditions. After an introduction about the history of the studies, the first part examines the oldest evidence on Attis, resorting to comparison with religious traditions earlier than or contemporary with Phrygian culture. The second part tackles the classical world and collects the elements of continuity and of innovation in respect of Asianic religious traditions. The third part analyses the problem of the processes of reinterpretation of the traditional cults that both the "pagan" philosophers and the fathers of the Church effected. The link between Attis and Death is discussed in the fourth part.

Book An Anthology of Informal Latin 200 BC AD 900

Download or read book An Anthology of Informal Latin 200 BC AD 900 written by J. N. Adams and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 1053 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains over fifty passages of Latin from 200 BC to AD 900, each with translation and linguistic commentary. It is not intended as an elementary reader (though suitable for university courses), but as an illustrative history of Latin covering more than a millennium, with almost every century represented. Conventional histories cite constructions out of context, whereas this work gives a sense of the period, genre, stylistic aims and idiosyncrasies of specific passages. 'Informal' texts, particularly if they portray talk, reflect linguistic variety and change better than texts adhering to classicising norms. Some of the texts are recent discoveries or little known. Writing tablets are well represented, as are literary and technical texts down to the early medieval period, when striking changes appear. The commentaries identify innovations, discontinuities and phenomena of long duration. Readers will learn much about the diversity and development of Latin.

Book Laughing at domestica facta

Download or read book Laughing at domestica facta written by Giuseppe Eugenio Rallo and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2024-01-22 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, the author embarks on a captivating journey to shed fresh light on the togata, a mid-Republican theatrical genre which survives only in fragments. The book seeks to answer pressing questions surrounding the togata's significance in identity construction during the middle Republic from a literary and cultural perspective. Delving deep into the fragmentary textual remains of the togata, the book explores how the Roman elite fashioned their identity. The author challenges the notion of monolithic identity construction, and explores the diverse forms of identity within the togata, offering a new perspective on the subject. This study thus positions the togata as a vital source for discerning the characteristics and beliefs by which the Romans distinguished themselves and their culture from others. By examining how Romans perceived themselves, their ideas about different social groups, and their literary and cultural ties to earlier traditions, this book aims to transform our understanding of the togata's role in Roman drama.

  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2007-12-13
  • ISBN : 0191527513
  • Pages : 528 pages

Download or read book Singing for the Gods written by Barbara Kowalzig and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-12-13 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing for the Gods develops a new approach towards an old question in the study of religion - the relationship of myth and ritual. Focusing on ancient Greek religion, Barbara Kowalzig exploits the joint occurrence of myth and ritual in archaic and classical Greek song-culture. She shows how choral performances of myth and ritual, taking place all over the ancient Greek world in the early fifth century BC, help to effect social and political change in their own time. Religious song emerges as integral to a rapidly changing society hovering between local, regional, and panhellenic identities and between aristocratic rule and democracy. Drawing on contemporary debates on myth, ritual, and performance in social anthropology, modern history, and theatre studies, this book establishes Greek religion's dynamic role and gives religious song-culture its deserved place in the study of Greek history.
