It shows the many traditional and potential new uses of insects for direct human consumption and the opportunities for and constraints to farming them for food and feed. It examines the body of research on issues such as insect nutrition and food safety, the use of insects as animal feed, and the processing and preservation of insects and their products. It highlights the need to develop a regulatory framework to govern the use of insects for food security. And it presents case studies and examples from around the world. Contrary to some commonly held notions, these people were not mere bystanders as European capitalism penetrated into Zimbabwe, but helped to shape the work and the living conditions they encountered as they entered wage employment. Steven Rubert's fine study draws on a rich variety of sources to illuminate the lives of these workers. The central focus of the study is the organization of workers' compounds, the social relationships there, and the labor of women and children, paid and unpaid. Rubert's findings indicate the beginnings of a moral economy on the tobacco farms prior to 1945.
