Book excerpt: Her father called her his little princess... The adored only child of affluent parents who placed the world at her feet, Amy Fisher had a glowing future. But she yearned for excitement, for the dark thrill of danger. Her friends called her a mysterious loner... While her classmates happily planned dates for the prom, 17-year-old Amy Fisher appalled them with tales of her wild sexual escapades, of her steamy, obsessive alleged affair with a married man--of a wife she wanted out of the picture. Police called her a call girl and a killer... But it wasn't until Amy was arrested for attempting to slay unsuspecting Mary Jo Buttafuoco in cold blood in front of her own home, that police and reporters uncovered stories that included a sinister hidden world of secret call girl rings, attempts to hire hitmen with payment in sex--and a beeper still nestled in her purse on which clients could page her with personal codes. Veteran People reporter Maria Eftimiades has covered the case in Lethal Lolita--and in this riveting book reveals a story even more shocking than the sensational headlines that captured the attention of the nation, and turn an all-American town inside out.

  • Author : David A. Koplow
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2006-04-03
  • ISBN : 1139456962
  • Pages : 167 pages

Download or read book Non Lethal Weapons written by David A. Koplow and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-03 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often, military and law enforcement authorities have found themselves constrained by inadequate weaponry. An emerging category of 'non-lethal weapons' carries promise for resolving this dilemma, proffering new capabilities for disabling opponents without inflicting death or permanent injury. This array of much more sophisticated technologies is being developed, and could emerge for use by soldiers and police in the near future. These augmented capabilities carry both immense promise and grave risks: they expand the power of law enforcement and military units, enabling them to accomplish assigned missions with greater finesse and reduced casualties. But they may also be misused - increasing maligned applications and inspiring leaders to over-rely upon a myth of 'bloodless combat'. This book explores the emerging world of non-lethal weapons by examining a series of case studies - recent real-world scenarios from five confrontations around the world where the availability of a modern arsenal might have made a difference.

Book Enemy Civilian Casualties

Download or read book Enemy Civilian Casualties written by Ofer Fridman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil casualties and collateral damage have been long considered as an undesired outcome of military activity that has to be reduced. While most of the contemporary discourse on this topic has been primarily concentrating on three main factors: the legal aspects of causing civil casualties, the impact of war on local population, and different factors of military professionalism required to avoid disproportional harm to civilians; this book asks an entirely different question. As the subject of civil casualties during military operations seems to be highly politicized, this book takes this discourse out of its usual niches and suggests that the indirect responsibility rests with the politicians and the public, which they represent. When a society, in the beginning of the 21st century, sends its troops to a battle, does it really care about the enemy civilian casualties? To answer this question, this book traces the political and cultural factors that have led to the failure of Non-Lethal Weapons – the great promise of the 1990s, which was intended to make the war significantly less lethal than it was known before. Examining three different cases, this study explains that the idea of minimizing civil casualties is no more than an illusion, and, in fact, neither politicians, nor societies, feel really stressed to change this situation.

Book Lethality Legality and Reality

Download or read book Lethality Legality and Reality written by Timothy M. Cullen and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study evaluates the potential for non-lethal weapons to become viable tools for the air support of ground forces in military conflicts. During the Cold War, the US Air Force developed conventional air-support aircraft and munitions to fight Soviet mechanized infantry and armor in the central plains of Europe. Since the end of the Cold War, the United States increasingly confronts adversaries in situations where it is not in the national interest to use destructive force. In response to this new security environment, the Department of Defense has established the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program and deployed a myriad of non-lethal devices to conflicts around the world. All non-lethal weapons in the US armed forces, however, are ground weapons and are severely limited in range. Aircraft could provide the perspective and added range joint force commanders desire; thus, this thesis explores the potential for aircraft to provide non-lethal force options."--Abstract.

Book Christian Slater Back from the Edge

Download or read book Christian Slater Back from the Edge written by Nigel Goodall and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-26 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Slater is a screen icon in his own time and one of the world's most admired actors. This long awaited biography traces the life and career of a fascinating Hollywood player...From the late eighties onwards, Christian Slater was the embodiment of teenage cool. Films such as The Name of the Rose, Young Guns II and Pump Up the Volume became instant cult classics and ensured his status as both a teenage heartthrob and as the elite actor of his generation. His position as an A-list star was hardly diminished during the nineties, with brilliant performances in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, True Romance, Broken Arrow and Very Bad Things establishing him as a formidable force in acting. But fame and success did not always sit easily with Christian, and from his off-screen behaviour resulted a 'bad boy' reputation that has stuck with him ever since. Alcohol and drug excesses have led to numerous incidents with the law, assault charges, even a stint in jail - but through all this, Christian managed to retain a highly successful career. These personal demons, as well as Christian's intense and turbulent love affairs with the likes of Winona Ryder, Christina Applegate and Patricia Arquette, have merely added to the romance of this highly elusive and attractive individual. Yet for the man himself, the crazy lifestyle started to take its toll, and in more recent years Christian started to come to terms with the personality flaws that have plagued him throughout his family life and career. In addition to his film career, Christian's impeccable performances in a recent stage play version of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest won him the Theatregoers Choice Award for Best Actor, and with his role in Broadway's The Glass Menagerie and the West End production of Sweet Bird of Youth, his return to theatrical mainstream is in full bloom. From this incisive biography, which includes a complete filmography, emerges a complex and sometimes contradictory character, a man who has dealt with fame, love, loss and success in his own, uncompromising and inspired way. The films, the flings, the affairs, the media gossip - all are dealt with truthfully in a book as fascinating and candid as the man himself.
