Book Introduction to Arithmetic Groups

Download or read book Introduction to Arithmetic Groups written by Armand Borel and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years after it made the transition from mimeographed lecture notes to a published book, Armand Borel's Introduction aux groupes arithmétiques continues to be very important for the theory of arithmetic groups. In particular, Chapter III of the book remains the standard reference for fundamental results on reduction theory, which is crucial in the study of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and the corresponding homogeneous spaces. The review of the original French version in Mathematical Reviews observes that “the style is concise and the proofs (in later sections) are often demanding of the reader.” To make the translation more approachable, numerous footnotes provide helpful comments.

Book Neutrices and External Numbers

Download or read book Neutrices and External Numbers written by Bruno Dinis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrices and External Numbers: A Flexible Number System introduces a new model of orders of magnitude and of error analysis, with particular emphasis on behaviour under algebraic operations. The model is formulated in terms of scalar neutrices and external numbers, in the form of an extension of the nonstandard set of real numbers. Many illustrative examples are given. The book starts with detailed presentation of the algebraic structure of external numbers, then deals with the generalized Dedekind completeness property, applications in analysis, domains of validity of approximations of solutions of differential equations, particularly singular perturbations. Finally, it describes the family of algebraic laws characterizing the practice of calculations with external numbers. Features Presents scalar neutrices and external numbers, a mathematical model of order of magnitude within the real number system. Outlines complete algebraic rules for the neutrices and external numbers Conducts operational analysis of convergence and integration of functions known up to orders of magnitude Formalises a calculus of error propagation, covariant with algebraic operations Presents mathematical models of phenomena incorporating their necessary imprecisions, in particular related to the Sorites paradox

Book Deontic Logic in Computer Science

Download or read book Deontic Logic in Computer Science written by Alessio Lomuscio and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-08-17 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the workshop proceedings of DEON 2004, the Seventh International Workshop on Deontic Logic in Computer Science. The DEON workshop series aims at bringing together researchers interested in topics - lated to the use of deontic logic in computer science. It traditionally promotes research in the relationship between normative concepts and computer science, arti?cial intelligence, organisation theory, and law. In addition to these topics, DEON 2004 placed special emphasis on the relationship between deontic logic and multi-agent systems. The workshop was held in Madeira, Portugal, on 26–28 May 2004. This v- ume includes all 15 papers presented at the workshop, as well as two abstracts from the two outstanding invited speakers we were privileged to host: Prof Mark Brown (Syracuse University, USA), and Prof Mike Wooldridge (University of Liverpool, UK). The reader will ?nd that the topics covered span from t- oretical investigations on deontic concepts and their formalisation in logic, to the use of deontic formalisms to verify and reason about multi-agent systems applications. We believe this makes it a well-balanced and interesting volume. We wish to thank all those who contributed to this workshop, and especially the authors of the submitted papers and the referees. They were all forced to work on a very tight timescale to make this volume a reality.

Book Introduction to Mathematical Logic

Download or read book Introduction to Mathematical Logic written by Elliot Mendelsohn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a compact mtroduction to some of the pnncipal tOpICS of mathematical logic . In the belief that beginners should be exposed to the most natural and easiest proofs, I have used free-swinging set-theoretic methods. The significance of a demand for constructive proofs can be evaluated only after a certain amount of experience with mathematical logic has been obtained. If we are to be expelled from "Cantor's paradise" (as nonconstructive set theory was called by Hilbert), at least we should know what we are missing. The major changes in this new edition are the following. (1) In Chapter 5, Effective Computability, Turing-computabIlity IS now the central notion, and diagrams (flow-charts) are used to construct Turing machines. There are also treatments of Markov algorithms, Herbrand-Godel-computability, register machines, and random access machines. Recursion theory is gone into a little more deeply, including the s-m-n theorem, the recursion theorem, and Rice's Theorem. (2) The proofs of the Incompleteness Theorems are now based upon the Diagonalization Lemma. Lob's Theorem and its connection with Godel's Second Theorem are also studied. (3) In Chapter 2, Quantification Theory, Henkin's proof of the completeness theorem has been postponed until the reader has gained more experience in proof techniques. The exposition of the proof itself has been improved by breaking it down into smaller pieces and using the notion of a scapegoat theory. There is also an entirely new section on semantic trees.

Book Geometry of Sets and Measures in Euclidean Spaces

Download or read book Geometry of Sets and Measures in Euclidean Spaces written by Pertti Mattila and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-02-25 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, the main theme of this book is the study of geometric properties of general sets and measures in euclidean spaces. Applications of this theory include fractal-type objects such as strange attractors for dynamical systems and those fractals used as models in the sciences. The author provides a firm and unified foundation and develops all the necessary main tools, such as covering theorems, Hausdorff measures and their relations to Riesz capacities and Fourier transforms. The last third of the book is devoted to the Beisovich-Federer theory of rectifiable sets, which form in a sense the largest class of subsets of euclidean space posessing many of the properties of smooth surfaces. These sets have wide application including the higher-dimensional calculus of variations. Their relations to complex analysis and singular integrals are also studied. Essentially self-contained, this book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in mathematics.

Book Sustainable Development Goals Analysis by Mathematics of Uncertainty

Download or read book Sustainable Development Goals Analysis by Mathematics of Uncertainty written by John N. Mordeson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-22 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses mathematics of uncertainty to examine how well countries are achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the members of the United Nations, with a focus on climate change, human trafficking and modern slavery. Although this approach has never been used before, mathematics of uncertainty is well suited to exploring these topics due to the lack of accurate data available. The authors place several scientific studies in a mathematical setting to pave the way for future research on issues of sustainability, climate change, human trafficking and modern slavery to using a wide range of mathematical techniques. Moreover, the book ranks countries in terms of their achievement of not only the SDGs, but in particular those SDGs pertinent to climate change, human trafficking, and modern slavery, and highlights the deficiencies in the foster care system that lead to human trafficking. As such it is an excellent reference resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics and the social sciences, as well as for researchers and teachers.

Book Modular Forms with Integral and Half Integral Weights

Download or read book Modular Forms with Integral and Half Integral Weights written by Xueli Wang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Modular Forms with Integral and Half-Integral Weights" focuses on the fundamental theory of modular forms of one variable with integral and half-integral weights. The main theme of the book is the theory of Eisenstein series. It is a fundamental problem to construct a basis of the orthogonal complement of the space of cusp forms; as is well known, this space is spanned by Eisenstein series for any weight greater than or equal to 2. The book proves that the conclusion holds true for weight 3/2 by explicitly constructing a basis of the orthogonal complement of the space of cusp forms. The problem for weight 1/2, which was solved by Serre and Stark, will also be discussed in this book. The book provides readers not only basic knowledge on this topic but also a general survey of modern investigation methods of modular forms with integral and half-integral weights. It will be of significant interest to researchers and practitioners in modular forms of mathematics. Dr. Xueli Wang is a Professor at South China Normal University, China. Dingyi Pei is a Professor at Guangzhou University, China.
