  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book One for the Road written by Tony Horwitz and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-08-18 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A high-spirited, comic ramble into the savage Outback populated by irreverent, beer-guzzling frontiersmen." --Chicago Tribune "A fascinating insight into what we're all about on the highways and byways along the outback track." --The Telegraph (Sydney) Swept off to live in Sydney by his Australian bride, American writer Tony Horwitz longs to explore the exotic reaches of his adopted land. So one day, armed only with a backpack and fantasies of the open road, he hitchhikes off into the awesome emptiness of Australia's outback. What follows is a hilarious, hair-raising ride into the hot red center of a continent so desolate that civilization dwindles to a gas pump and a pub. While the outback's terrain is inhospitable, its scattered inhabitants are anything but. Horwitz entrusts himself to Aborigines, opal diggers, jackeroos, card sharks, and sunstruck wanderers who measure distance in the number of beers consumed en route. Along the way, Horwitz discovers that the outback is as treacherous as it is colorful. Bug-bitten, sunblasted, dust-choked, and bloodied by a near-fatal accident, Horwitz endures seven thousand miles of the world's most forbidding real estate, and some very bizarre personal encounters, as he winds his way to Queensland, Alice Springs, Perth, Darwin--and a hundred bush pubs in between. Horwitz, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of two national bestsellers, Confederates in the Attic and Baghdad Without a Map, is the ideal tour guide for anyone who has ever dreamed of a genuine Australian adventure. "Lively, fast-paced and amusing . . . a consistently interesting and entertaining account." --Kirkus Reviews "Ironical, perceptive and subtle . . . will have readers getting out their maps and itching to follow Horwitz's tracks. . . . The internal journey is his finest achievement; he allows the reader into his heart, to go travelling with him there, sharing his adventures of the spirit." --Sunday Times (London)

Book A Journey Into the Australian Outback

Download or read book A Journey Into the Australian Outback written by Warren Dent and published by Krandis. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Outback, the unexpected is always expected. The land is wild and inhospitable. Man has no business here. But he ventures here anyway, and often pays the highest price of unwelcomeness. Even the native animals make themselves scarce in this unwatered country. But man's inherent penchant to explore brings him here anyway. And so it was for two of us who wanted to touch the edge of the Never-Never-Land. The iconic Birdsville Track has long represented a major challenge of macho manliness. Year after year it has claimed victims with its insatiable thirst for inexperienced newcomers who thought they were fearless and could survive whatever was thrown their way. Only to find their self-beliefs were false as they perished in the scorching sun's rays and the searing winds that blew the sand dunes to new locations. Like others, we tried to be better prepared and fully ready for the unexpected. Even so, when it hit us, it became the scariest moment ever experienced in our fragile lives. This story dates back 50 years. Much has changed in the interior of Australia since then. A graded dirt road now exists between Birdsville and Marree, and well organized Eco-tours allow one to explore the back country in safety. Living and traveling conditions were a lot harder and riskier half a century ago. There were no cell phones for communication, just limited two-way radio in the ranchers' homes, but not for those passing through their realm. As a city-bred lad I was relatively ignorant of life 'beyond the black stump', so there were numerous mind-opening learnings from my trip. This memoir is carefully derived from notes made at the time. Added to the memories are the personal reflections and learnings from the trip that have impacted me positively over the ensuing years. In retrospect, our bold venture to the fringe of aborigine-only country was an amazing awakening to just how mere and vulnerable we mortals are.
