Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by TPRC at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemina tion phases of the activity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we have concluded that it will be in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by a well-known publishing house to assure improved service and better communication. Hence, effective with this Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences will be disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. As we embark on this new partnership with Plenum, we also initiate a new venture in that this important annual reference work now covers Canadian universities as well as those in the United States. We are sure that this broader base will greatly enhance the value of these volumes.

Book Transitions to Alternative Vehicles and Fuels

Download or read book Transitions to Alternative Vehicles and Fuels written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-04-14 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a century, almost all light-duty vehicles (LDVs) have been powered by internal combustion engines operating on petroleum fuels. Energy security concerns about petroleum imports and the effect of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on global climate are driving interest in alternatives. Transitions to Alternative Vehicles and Fuels assesses the potential for reducing petroleum consumption and GHG emissions by 80 percent across the U.S. LDV fleet by 2050, relative to 2005. This report examines the current capability and estimated future performance and costs for each vehicle type and non-petroleum-based fuel technology as options that could significantly contribute to these goals. By analyzing scenarios that combine various fuel and vehicle pathways, the report also identifies barriers to implementation of these technologies and suggests policies to achieve the desired reductions. Several scenarios are promising, but strong, and effective policies such as research and development, subsidies, energy taxes, or regulations will be necessary to overcome barriers, such as cost and consumer choice.

Book Automotive Engine Alternatives

Download or read book Automotive Engine Alternatives written by Robert L. Evans and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the International Symposium on Alternative and Advanced Automotive Engines, held in Vancouver, B.C., on August 11 and 12, 1986. The symposium was sponsored by EXPO 86 and The University of British Columbia, and was part of the specialized periods program of EXPO 86, the 1986 world's fair held in Vancouver. Some 80 attendees were drawn from 11 countries, representing the academic, auto motive and large engine communities. The purpose of the symposium was to provide a critical review of the major alternatives to the internal combustion engine. The scope of the symposium was limited to consideration of combustion engines, so that electric power, for example, was not considered. This was not a reflec tion on the possible contribution which electric propulsion may make in the future, but rather an attempt to focus the proceedings more sharply than if all possible propulsion systems had been considered. In this way all of the contributors were able to participate in the sometimes lively discussion sessions following the presentation of each paper.

Book Reduced Emissions and Fuel Consumption in Automobile Engines

Download or read book Reduced Emissions and Fuel Consumption in Automobile Engines written by Fred Schäfer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last several years, there has been much discussion on the interrelation of CO2 emissions with the global warming phenomenon. This in turn has increased pressure to develop and produce more fuel efficient engines and vehicles. This is the central topic of this book. It covers the underlying processes which cause pollutant emissions and the possibilities of reducing them, as well as the fuel consumption of gasoline and diesel engines, including direct injection diesel engines. As well as the engine-related causes of pollution, which is found in the raw exhaust, there is also a description of systems and methods for exhaust post treatment. The significant influence of fuels and lubricants (both conventional and alternative fuels) on emission behavior is also covered. In addition to the conventional gasoline and diesel engines, lean-burn and direct injection gasoline engines and two-stroke gasoline and diesel engines are included. The potential for reducing fuel consumption and pollution is described as well as the related reduction of CO2 emissions. Finally, a detailed summary of the most important laws and regulations pertaining to pollutant emissions and consumption limits is presented. This book is intended for practising engineers involved in research and applied sciences as well as for interested engineering students.

Book Alternative Vehicle Propulsion System with Significantly Reduced Emission Values Based on Cold Liquefied Air

Download or read book Alternative Vehicle Propulsion System with Significantly Reduced Emission Values Based on Cold Liquefied Air written by Tivadar Menyhart and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-14 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2020 in the subject Physics - Thermodynamics, language: English, abstract: This document describes the development and calculation results of an efficiency-enhanced internal combustion machine (hereinafter referred to as BlueXTurb) with very low emission and consumption values, which can serve as an alternative vehicle power unit. The conventional Joule-Brayton cycle is greatly improved by drastically lowering the compressor outlet temperature and increasing the turbine inlet pressure. The thermodynamic efficiency of the machine is increased by increasing the total pressure ratio to over 500:1. This is made possible by supplying the oxidizer in cold liquid form (approx. -190 ° C) with the greatest possible density and the least compressibility. The turbo-electric power unit concept promises the greatest advantages for a motor vehicle, i.e. a turbine that directly drives a (high-frequency) generator and can thus be kept at the optimal operating point. This means that electricity is available in a current/voltage conversion - with intermediate storage if necessary. The weight of the energy carrier - cold liquefied air and a small amount of liquid or gaseous fuel - including the vessel can be reduced by at least half compared to the traction battery of an electric vehicle of the same range. Gasoline, natural gas, ethanol, hydrogen, e-fuels or a gas mixture such as hythane can serve as a fuel. Compared to a modern, conventional Otto engine, the CO2 emissions of a car with a gasoline BlueXTurb power unit can be reduced by around 60-70% under realistic conditions. An H2-BlueXTurb enables a cost-effective and compact CO2-free propulsion system. The concept is able to meet the European CO2 emission limits, both as a car power unit and as a truck propulsion system by 2030.
