Book Atlas of Sustainable Development Goals 2018

Download or read book Atlas of Sustainable Development Goals 2018 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlas of Sustainable Development Goals 2018 is a visual guide to the trends, challenges and measurement issues related to each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The Atlas features maps and data visualizations, primarily drawn from World Development Indicators (WDI) - the World Bank’s compilation of internationally comparable statistics about global development and the quality of people’s lives. Given the breadth and scope of the SDGs, the editors have been selective, emphasizing issues considered important by experts in the World Bank’s Global Practices and Cross Cutting Solution Areas. Nevertheless, The Atlas aims to reflect the breadth of the Goals themselves and presents national and regional trends and snapshots of progress towards the UN’s seventeen Sustainable Development Goals related to: poverty, hunger, health, education, gender, water, energy, jobs, infrastructure, inequalities, cities, consumption, climate, oceans, the environment, peace, institutions, and partnerships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlas of Sustainable Development Goals 2017 uses maps, charts and analysis to illustrate, trends, challenges and measurement issues related to each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The Atlas primarily draws on World Development Indicators (WDI) - the World Bank's compilation of internationally comparable statistics about global development and the quality of people's lives Given the breadth and scope of the SDGs, the editors have been selective, emphasizing issues considered important by experts in the World Bank's Global Practices and Cross Cutting Solution Areas. Nevertheless, The Atlas aims to reflect the breadth of the Goals themselves and presents national and regional trends and snapshots of progress towards the UN's seventeen Sustainable Development Goals: poverty, hunger, health, education, gender, water, energy, jobs, infrastructure, inequalities, cities, consumption, climate, oceans, the environment, peace, institutions, and partnerships. Between 1990 and 2013, nearly one billion people were raised out of extreme poverty. Its elimination is now a realistic prospect, although this will require both sustained growth and reduced inequality. Even then, gender inequalities continue to hold back human potential. Undernourishment and stunting have nearly halved since 1990, despite increasing food loss, while the burden of infectious disease has also declined. Access to water has expanded, but progress on sanitation has been slower. For too many people, access to healthcare and education still depends on personal financial means. To date the environmental cost of growth has been high. Accumulated damage to oceanic and terrestrial ecosystems is considerable. But hopeful signs exist: while greenhouse gas emissions are at record levels, so too is renewable energy investment. While physical infrastructure continues to expand, so too does population, so that urban housing and rural access to roads remain a challenge, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Meanwhile the institutional infrastructure of development strengthens, with more reliable government budgeting and foreign direct investment recovering from a post-financial crisis decline. Official development assistance, however, continues to fall short of target levels.

Book Lesotho Land cover atlas 2017 2023

Download or read book Lesotho Land cover atlas 2017 2023 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lesotho Next Generation Land Cover Database (NextGen-LCDB) and Atlas (NextGen-Atlas) have been prepared in support of ReNOKA, the national programme for Integrated Catchment Management in Lesotho, through the Action “Support to Integrated Catchment Management in Lesotho”, co-financed by the EU and BMZ, and implemented by GIZ. The NextGen-LCDB was developed in close collaboration with the ICM management Unit, the ICM Data Reference Group, and the Lesotho Governmental Institutions including the Bureau of Statistics (BOS), Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS), Ministry of Forestry, Range and Soil Conservation (MFRSC). The Lesotho Government supported the construction of the NextGen-Atlas by supporting the development of the legend, revising the methodology, and participating actively in the field survey campaign. The MFRSC played a key role in the survey design and in the definition of environmental indicators for rangelands and wetlands. The ICM Data Reference Group and the Bureau of Statistics (BOS) played a decisive role in the validation of the land cover methodology and the NextGen-LCDB. The NextGen-Atlas of Lesotho provides information on the land cover distribution at multiple geographical levels and across the time frame 2017-2022: at the national level, at the district level, at the municipality level, at the main catchment area level, and by six selected Sub-Catchment areas under ICM priority interventions. The development of the NextGen-Atlas involved the use of ancillary datasets provided by the Ministry of Forestry, Range and Soil Conservation (MFRSC), Ministry of Local Government and Chieftainship Affairs (MLGCA), Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS), Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture (MTEC), Ministry of Water Affairs (MWA) and Lesotho Land Administration Authority (LAA).

Book Africa s Lakes

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : UNEP/Earthprint
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9789280726947
  • Pages : 108 pages

Download or read book Africa s Lakes written by and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2006 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared as part of UNEP's contribution to the 11th World Lakes Conference (held in Nairobi, Kenya in November 2005), this publication examines the environmental changes taking place to Africa's lakes by analysing ground photographs, current and historical satellite images and scientific evidence. Changes highlighted include the rapid shrinking of Lake Songor in Ghana, partly as a result of intensive salt production, and the extraordinary changes in the Zambezi river system as a result of the building of the Cabora Basa dam site. Other impacts, some natural and some human-made and which can only be truly appreciated from space, include the extensive deforestation around Lake Nakuru in Kenya, and the falling water levels of Lake Victoria which is now about a metre lower than it was in the early 1990s. The analysis recognises the importance of Africa's lakes as a source of livelihoods for many local communities, their contribution to the socio-economic development of the continent and the need for the sustainable management of these resources in order to help overcome poverty and meet internationally agreed development goals by 2015.

Book Land Cover Atlas of the Republic of South Sudan

Download or read book Land Cover Atlas of the Republic of South Sudan written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations  and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-06-19 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the distribution of different land cover classes, as revealed by the updated Land Cover Atlas, holds paramount importance and is an innovative approach in helping to understand land cover dynamics. It enables decision-makers to harness this knowledge for strategic planning and informed decision-making in sectors such as agriculture, conservation, water resource management, and land degradation prevention. By recognizing the distribution and dynamics of land cover, stakeholders can work towards sustainable development goals, ecological resilience, and improved livelihoods in South Sudan. The development and utilization of the Land Cover Atlas highlight the significance of innovation, collaboration, and partnerships in decision-making processes and land cover management. By fostering collaborative efforts between organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Government of South Sudan, and supportive donors, a comprehensive understanding of land dynamics can be achieved. This collaborative approach enables stakeholders to work together towards effective resource management, resilience-building, and sustainable development, benefiting the people and environment of South Sudan.
