Book Grammaire des pr dicats complexes les constructions nom verbe Collection langues et syntaxe

Download or read book Grammaire des pr dicats complexes les constructions nom verbe Collection langues et syntaxe written by SAMVELIAN Pollet and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Studies in the Composition and Decomposition of Event Predicates

Download or read book Studies in the Composition and Decomposition of Event Predicates written by Boban Arsenijević and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed, perceptive addition to the linguistics literature analyzes the semantic components of event predicates, exploring their fine-grained elements as well as their agency in linguistic processing. The papers go beyond pure semantics to consider their varying influences of event predicates on argument structure, aspect, scalarity, and event structure. The volume shows how advances in the linguistic theory of event predicates, which have spawned Davidsonian and neo-Davidsonian notions of event arguments, in addition to ‘event structure’ frameworks and mereological models for the eventuality domain, have sidelined research on specific sets of entailments that support a typology of event predicates. Addressing this imbalance in the literature, the work also presents evidence indicating a more complex role for scalar structures than currently assumed. It will enrich the work of semanticists, psycholinguists, and syntacticians with a decompositional approach to verb phrase structure.

Book Light Verb Constructions as Complex Verbs

Download or read book Light Verb Constructions as Complex Verbs written by Anna Pompei and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-10-23 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of light verb constructions has been traditionally related to the ‘insignificance’ of the verb, which is described as a grammatical item only codifying TAM system and φ-features, whereas the whole predicative content is thought to be conveyed by the noun. This book deals with the light verb constructions as instances of complex verbs, intended as multi-predicational but monoclausal structures. This allows to deepen the actual verb lightness, the effective noun predicativity, as well as their effect on the cohesion of the construction. The papers in this volume reflect on the concrete contribution of noun and verb to the event and argument structure, and on the relevance of semantically different noun classes for the verb selection. From different theoretical approaches, data of a great variety of languages are investigated, such as Indo-European languages – both modern (Germanic, Slavic, Romance and Iranian languages) and ancient (Latin and Ancient Greek) – but also Mandarin Chinese, and different polysynthetic languages (e.g. Ket, Nivkh, Murrinh-Patha, Kiowa, Bininj Gun-wok, Ainu). The range of topics, languages and perspectives presented in this book make it of great interest to both theoretical and applied linguists.

Book Possessors Predicates and Movement in the Determiner Phrase

Download or read book Possessors Predicates and Movement in the Determiner Phrase written by Artemis Alexiadou and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1998-10-15 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a cross-section of current research on the internal syntax of ‘Determiner Phrases` (DPs), with special emphasis on the analysis of DPs modified by genitival, adjectival and other non-finite attributes. Possessors, Predicates and Movement in the DP illustrates clearly the ongoing debate over older and more recent approaches to the syntax of DPs in particular in the wake of the minimalist program (Chomsky 1995) and Kayne’s antisymmetry hypothesis (Kayne 1994). The relative theoretical coherence among the contributions permits detailed comparison of specific syntactic proposals, providing a solid basis for further debate. Several of the papers address the syntactic questions in parallel with related semantic or morphological issues. The value of this collection to the study of Universal Grammar is also underlined by its comparative bias. Analyses of Germanic, Romance and Balkan languages figure prominently, and a number of new empirical generalizations within and between languages are discussed.

Book Predicates and Their Subjects

Download or read book Predicates and Their Subjects written by Susan Rothstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Predicates and their Subjects is an in-depth study of the syntax-semantics interface focusing on the structure of the subject-predicate relation. Starting from where the author's 1983 dissertation left off, the book argues that there is syntactic constraint that clauses (small and tensed) are constructed out of a one-place unsaturated expression, the predicate, which must be applied to a syntactic argument, its subject. The author shows that this predication relation cannot be reduced to a thematic relation or a projection of argument structure, but must be a purely syntactic constraint. Chapters in the book show how the syntactic predication relation is semantically interpreted, and how the predication relation explains constraints on DP-raising and on the distribution of pleonastics in English. The second half of the book extends the theory of predication to cover copular constructions; it includes an account of the structure of small clauses in Hebrew, of the use of `be' in predicative and identity sentences in English, and concludes with a study of the meaning of the verb `be'.

Book Practical and Theoretical Reason in Modern Philosophy

Download or read book Practical and Theoretical Reason in Modern Philosophy written by Paniel Reyes Cárdenas and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present collection aims to examine this fertile period in the history of philosophy concerning its significance for understanding the relation between theoretical and practical reason, or, relatedly, facts and values. Our contributors have explored different important ways in which both the shortcomings and insights of the theoretical/practical distinction have shaped Western philosophy.

Book Computing Attitude and Affect in Text Theory and Applications

Download or read book Computing Attitude and Affect in Text Theory and Applications written by James G. Shanahan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-11-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Language Technology (HLT) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems have typically focused on the “factual” aspect of content analysis. Other aspects, including pragmatics, opinion, and style, have received much less attention. However, to achieve an adequate understanding of a text, these aspects cannot be ignored. The chapters in this book address the aspect of subjective opinion, which includes identifying different points of view, identifying different emotive dimensions, and classifying text by opinion. Various conceptual models and computational methods are presented. The models explored in this book include the following: distinguishing attitudes from simple factual assertions; distinguishing between the author’s reports from reports of other people’s opinions; and distinguishing between explicitly and implicitly stated attitudes. In addition, many applications are described that promise to benefit from the ability to understand attitudes and affect, including indexing and retrieval of documents by opinion; automatic question answering about opinions; analysis of sentiment in the media and in discussion groups about consumer products, political issues, etc. ; brand and reputation management; discovering and predicting consumer and voting trends; analyzing client discourse in therapy and counseling; determining relations between scientific texts by finding reasons for citations; generating more appropriate texts and making agents more believable; and creating writers’ aids. The studies reported here are carried out on different languages such as English, French, Japanese, and Portuguese. Difficult challenges remain, however. It can be argued that analyzing attitude and affect in text is an “NLP”-complete problem.

Book Individuals Minds and Bodies Themes from Leibniz

Download or read book Individuals Minds and Bodies Themes from Leibniz written by Massimiliano Carrara and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2004 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is analytic metaphysics the kind of metaphysics that contemporary analytic philosophers study? One of the aims of this special issue of the Studia Leibnitiana is to demonstrate that it would be misleading to think so. The reason is simply that some important past metaphysicians also adopted an analytic style and G. W. Leibniz is surely one of them. His analysis on the notion of identity and individuality, on the difference between artifacts and biological entities are pieces of analytic metaphysics. The other aim of the volume is to show that there is a close semantic connection between the concepts of individual, mind and body in Leibniz. The book tried to demonstrate it from both an analytical and a historical point of view. .

Book Contingent Causality and the Foundations of Duns Scotus Metaphysics

Download or read book Contingent Causality and the Foundations of Duns Scotus Metaphysics written by Sylwanowicz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study challenges the current view that the originality of Duns Scotus' notion of contingent causality lies in modal logic. It works as an ontological concept, and so provides a point of entry into the foundations of Duns Scotus' metaphysics. As one of two basic manifestations of the active causal power of being, it points to Scotus' underlying ontology, which can no longer be seen as a failure to attain Aquinas' clarity. We have a positive alternative, capable of generating the characteristic Scotist theses: univocity of being, formal distinction, haecceitas, proof of God's existence from possibility, the producibility of God's ideas. The exploration of the role contingent causality plays in Scotus' and Bradwardine's views on free will and predestination, and Bradwardine's claim that 'God can undo the past', opens the way towards new interpretations.

Book Complex Predicates in Nonderivational Syntax

Download or read book Complex Predicates in Nonderivational Syntax written by Erhard Hinrichs and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex Predicates in Nonderivational Syntax collects recent research in complex predicates within a variety of languages, such as German, Dutch, Italian, French, Korean, and Urdu. Recognizing that complex predicates is one of the most active research areas in nonderivational theories of grammar, contributors focus on diverse aspects of complex predicate phenomena, including order variation, constituency relations, interactions with other construction types, argument relations, and the syntax morphology interface. Their concentration on issues of linguistically adequate description open these articles to those interested in syntax, semantics, morphology, computational linguistics, and natural language processing. It includes essays written by the leading researchers in the field, including Ivan Sag. It makes the clearest and most advanced statement to date about complex predicates.

Book Atypical predicate argument relations

Download or read book Atypical predicate argument relations written by Thierry Ruchot and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with atypical predicate-argument relations. Although the relations between predicates, especially verbal, and their arguments have been long studied, most studies are concerned with typical telic verbs in the past tense, indicative mood, active voice, with all arguments expressed. Recently, linguists have become interested in other types of predicate-argument relations displaying atypical properties, be they morphological or syntactic, in one language or cross-linguistically. The articles in this book investigate some of these: argument marking with some special groups of verbs, arguments not foreseen in the verb valency and contributed by the construction, verbs in idiomatic constructions, valency-changing operations, arguments in thetic sentences or in participle constructions etc. The authors work within different theoretical frameworks and on various languages, from more current languages like English, Spanish, French or German, to Hebrew or lamaholot, an Austronesian language.

Book Complex Predicates in Oceanic Languages

Download or read book Complex Predicates in Oceanic Languages written by Isabelle Bril and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2004 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series is a platform for contributions of all kinds to this rapidly developing field. General problems are studied from the perspective of individual languages, language families, language groups, or language samples. Conclusions are the result of a deepened study of empirical data. Special emphasis is given to little-known languages, whose analysis may shed new light on long-standing problems in general linguistics.

Book Anaphoric Relations in English and French

Download or read book Anaphoric Relations in English and French written by Francis Cornish and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, this book focuses on Anaphoric relations in the English and French languages, a phenomenon that involves a complex interaction between grammar and discourse. Studies of anaphora taking a largely ‘textual’ approach to the subject have tended to underestimate the effect upon its formation of referential and discourse factors, while studies framed within a psycholinguistic and computational perspective have been inclined to minimise the importance of the purely linguistic features connected with anaphora. This volume places the study of anaphora upon a firmer foundation by examining both its nature and functions in discourse, by pinpointing the range of factors relevant to its operation in the two languages under study, and by attempting to relate the textual and interactional perspectives within a more comprehensive framework.

Book Leibniz and the vinculum Substantiale

Download or read book Leibniz and the vinculum Substantiale written by Brandon Look and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 1999 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. "Brandon Look's Leibniz and the 'Vinculum Substantiale' is a welcome addition to the literature and should become standard reading for scholars working on Leibniz's account of the material world."
