Elle alimenta la dévotion et la prière de nombreuses générations de chrétiens, surtout des laïcs, qui cherchaient dans leur vie quotidienne à vivre en respectant les préceptes du Christ (d'où son titre). Elle suscite davantage de réserves aujourd'hui car certains estiment qu'elle donne trop d'importance à l'humilité, la résignation et l'abnégation.
