Book excerpt: De l'alliance de 1603 à la Proclamation royale de 1763, les peuples autochtones sont reconnus comme des alliés, partenaires du commerce, ou pour leur participation aux guerres de l'Empire. Avec la création du Canada en 1867 s'amorce la mise en place d'une politique canadienne qui, au-delà des grands principes de reconnaissance, s'enferme dans une série de lois discriminatoires qui aboutissent, en 1876, à la Loi sur les Indiens du Canada... Cette loi, comme une camisole de force, en vient à qualifier pour disqualifier les autochtones sur le plan de la reconnaissance tant politique que juridique. Il faudra attendre les années 1970 pour que s'amorce une difficile déconstruction de l'histoire d'un système de discrimination systémique. Propos du premier ministre René Lévesque lors des discours en appui à la motion de l'Assemblée nationale du Québec qui reconnaît les nations autochtones du Québec (20 mars 1985) : « En terminant, on me permettra, M. le Président, de proposer, conformément à plusieurs recommandations qu'on a reçues depuis le dépôt de la présente motion, que le mot bande qui est très courant, mais pas partout chez nos concitoyens amérindiens, soit remplacé par le mot communauté, au cinquième paragraphe de la motion. Ce nouveau terme, qui est tout simplement plus englobant que le précédent, est également plus respectueux de la diversité des nations autochtones et convient mieux, en particulier, lorsqu'on s'adresse aux Inuits. Il pourrait aussi permettre, le cas échéant, de conclure des ententes avec une communauté autochtone composée d'un groupe d'Indiens important, mais qui seraient sans statut ou hors réserve, et on sait qu'il y en a plusieurs milliers chez nous. » (Assemblée nationale du Québec, 19 mars 1985)

While the details of how this region emerged as the heartland of French colonial society have been thoroughly outlined by historians, much remains unknown or misunderstood about how it also witnessed the formation of a string of distinct Indigenous communities, several of which persist to this day. Drawing on a range of ethnohistorical sources, Flesh Reborn reconstructs the early history of seventeenth-century mission settlements and of their Algonquin, Innu, Wendat, Iroquois, and Wabanaki founders. Far from straightforward byproducts of colonialist ambitions, these communities arose out of an entanglement of armed conflict, diplomacy, migration, subsistence patterns, religion, kinship, leadership, community-building, and identity formation. The violence and trauma of war, even as it tore populations apart and from their ancestral lands, brought together a great human diversity. By foregrounding Indigenous mission settlements of the Saint Lawrence valley, Flesh Reborn challenges conventional histories of New France and early Canada. It is a comprehensive examination of the foundation of these communities and reveals the fundamental ways they, in turn, shaped the course of war and peace in the region.

Book excerpt: In Shakespeare in Québec, Jennifer Drouin analyses representations of nation and gender in Shakespearean adaptations written in Québec since the Quiet Revolution. Using postcolonial and gender theory, Drouin traces the evolution of discourses of nation and gender in Québec from the Conquest of New France to the present, and she elaborates a theory of adaptation specific to Shakespeare studies. Drouin’s book explains why Québécois playwrights seem so obsessed with rewriting “le grand Will,” what changes they make to the Shakespearean text, and how the differences between Shakespeare and the adaptations engage the nationalist, feminist, and queer concerns of Québec society. Close readings from ten plays investigate the radical changes to content that allowed Québécois playwrights to advocate for political change and contribute to the hot debates of the Quiet Revolution, the 1970 October Crisis, the 1980 and 1995 referenda, the rise of feminism, and the emergence of AIDS. Drouin reveals not only how Shakespeare has been adapted in Québec but also how Québécois adaptations have evolved in response to changes in the political climate. As a critical analysis in English of rich but largely ignored French plays, Shakespeare in Québec bridges Canada’s “two solitudes.”
