The book opens with a review of the alternate electron transport mechanism to the main phosphorylating respiratory chain. One paper presents the respiration of mutant stains of Neurospora crassa treated with chloramphenicol that results in three distinct pathways distinguishable by the use of inhibitors. Another paper outlines the testing methods to determine the parameters controlling cyanide-insensitive respiration in Acanthamoeba castellanii and notes the physiological function of this insensitivity. The book then explains that this phenomenon of cyanide-insensitive respiration is common among yeasts, and such pathway of electron transport to oxygen that is insensitive to cyanide or antimycin is well founded in many higher plants and microorganisms. One paper then investigates the terminal oxidases found in two stages in the life cycle of trypanosomes, which cause African sleeping sickness. Another paper notes that a study of the energy metabolism of End. magnusii, a kind of yeast, showed no glucose repression, no alternative oxidation pathway, and no cyanide-insensitive pathway was normally present. The text will be of interest to those whose work involves these organisms, and to researchers, professors, and students whose disciplines are in developmental biology, micro-biology, or cellular biology.

His religious superiors approved of his taking on this work for the Crown. He served as Minister for Religious Affairs, or Royal Confessor or ‘keeper of the king’s conscience’, for Louis XIV. During Annat’s confessorate of sixteen years, no internal conflict in the Gallican Church was so strong as the Jansenist controversy. Today everything seems different, as revisionist history has viewed Jansenism as an orthodox Augustinian alternative to explain the Catholic Faith, in contrast to the prevailing Spanish Molinism and Suarezianism, whose roots were in Thomism and Aristotle. There was intense internal struggle within the French Church to devise a legal formulary that might decrease the strength of Jansenism. The present work examines the life of Annat in all of its complexities, a life which may have been forgotten by history if not for the celebrated literary figure Blaise Pascal, who was a committed Jansenist and foe of François Annat.

Book excerpt: A popular myth about the travails of Africa holds that the continent's long history of poor economic performance reflects the inability of its leaders and policymakers to fulfill the long list of preconditions to be met before sustained growth can be achieved. These conditions are said to vary from the necessary quantity and quality of physical and human capital to the appropriate institutions and business environments. While intellectually charming and often elegantly formulated, that conventional wisdom is actually contradicted by historical evidence and common sense. It also suggests a form of intellectual mimicry that posits a unique path to prosperity for all countries regardless of their level of development and economic structure. In fact, the argument underlining that reasoning is tautological, and the policy prescriptions derived from it are fatally teleological: low-income countries are by definition those where such ingredients are missing. None of today's high-income countries started its growth process with the "required" and complete list of growth ingredients. Unless one truly believes that the continent of Africa-and most developing countries-are ruled predominantly if not exclusively by plutocrats with a high propensity for sadomasochism, the conventional view must be re-examined, debated, and questioned. This volume-the second of the ^lOxford Handbook of Africa and Economics-reassesses the economic policies and practices observed across the continent since independence. It offers a collection of analyses by some of the leading economists and development thinkers of our time, and reflects a wide range of perspectives and viewpoints.
