Book excerpt: This book is the first detailed history of the Russian Symbolist movement, from its initial hostile reception as a symptom of European decadence to its absorption into the mainstream of Russian literature, and eventual disintegration. It focuses on the two generations of writers whose work served as the seedbed of Existentialism in thought and of Modernism in prose and the performing arts, and reassesses their achievements in the light of modern research. At the centre of the study are the texts themselves, with prose quoted in English translation and poetry given in the original Russian with prose translations. There is a valuable bibliography of primary sources and an extensive chronological appendix. Book The Business Legends of India

Download or read book The Business Legends of India written by Arjun Sampat and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian economy and business landscape have undergone a sea change since Independence in 1947, with the country’s socialist policies and the License Raj giving way to economic liberalization. The IT and ITeS revolution made India the back office of the world. The rapid spread of the Internet and the world’s lowest data costs have made India a hub for fintech innovation. The development of the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) has resulted in the explosion of e-commerce. As we celebrate the growth of entrepreneurship and the start-up culture in India, some questions come to mind: • Who were the trailblazing Indian entrepreneurs who made India’s growth story possible? What were their characteristics? • What were the strategies they used to succeed? • Who are today’s business leaders and how are they driving growth in today’s volatile world? This book seeks to answer these questions. “An inspiring summary of the lives of some of India’s business stalwarts and new-age entrepreneurs by a young and curious mind. Arjun Sampat lucidly captures the key strategies and success factors of these entrepreneurs. I’m sure this book will further encourage the spirit of entrepreneurship amongst young Indians.” -Sonal Agrawal, Global Chair, AltoPartners and Managing Partner - India, Accord Group “India’s entrepreneurs are world-class global traders – interacting with them is the main reason I love my job as an investor!! For a young man like Arjun Sampat to author such a terrific, detailed book, at such a young age, is a testament to the impression these leaders have made in the minds of our youth. I am sure this will catalyse and inspire many young Indians to undertake their own entrepreneurial journeys.” -Manish Kejriwal, Founder & Managing Partner, Kedaara Capital

Book The Indian Chief as Tragic Hero

Download or read book The Indian Chief as Tragic Hero written by Gordon M. Sayre and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leaders of anticolonial wars of resistance--Metacom, Pontiac, Tecumseh, and Cuauhtemoc--spread fear across the frontiers of North America. Yet once defeated, these men became iconic martyrs for postcolonial national identity in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. By the early 1800s a craze arose for Indian tragedy on the U.S. stage, such as John Augustus Stone's Metamora, and for Indian biographies as national historiography, such as the writings of Benjamin Drake, Francis Parkman, and William Apess. With chapters on seven major resistance struggles, including the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and the Natchez Massacre of 1729, The Indian Chief as Tragic Hero offers an analysis of not only the tragedies and epics written about these leaders, but also their own speeches and strategies, as recorded in archival sources and narratives by adversaries including Hernan Cortes, Antoine-Simon Le Page du Pratz, Joseph Doddridge, Robert Rogers, and William Henry Harrison. Sayre concludes that these tragedies and epics about Native resistance laid the foundation for revolutionary culture and historiography in the three modern nations of North America, and that, at odds with the trope of the complaisant "vanishing Indian," these leaders presented colonizers with a cathartic reproof of past injustices.

Book History Of The Andaman Islands

Download or read book History Of The Andaman Islands written by PRONOB KUMAR SIRCAR and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-11-09 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History of the Andaman Islands - Unsung Heroes and Untold Stories' is different and unique unearthing many riddles and facts of Indian and Andaman history. The book is an outcome of the decades-long research on the soil of the Andamans by an Andaman born ethno-historian. Andaman History is neither only of pirates and aborigines, nor about the land of fishes, corals and beaches alone. It is larger, longer, more various, more beautiful and more terrible than anything anyone has ever said about it. The diverse historical events have left their mark as a reminder of some good and some bad times, of tragedy and hope, of atrocity and courage in the face of it, of great acts of sacrifice and bravery; so much so that the saga of sacrifice and the martyrdom, beginning from the freedom struggle of 1857 to end with the freedom in 1947, can never be forgotten. Despite the unpleasing fact that a large part of the history records were burnt by the Japanese in the Andamans, writing with verve and extraordinary range, the author dividing the book into three parts Time, People, and Place, exclusively unravels the riddles of the history, especially pertaining to the untold heroes of the Indian Mutiny of 1858, the unforgettable events, the unsung stories, the aboriginal attacks and the reasons thereof, the witnessed tales of the torture, the sacrifice and the massacres. Apart from its enlightening role, the book, by giving unexpected important clues about the people lost in wars and struggles, establishes a sentimental value in the hearts of their descendants.

Download or read book THE LEGENDS OF TEXAS written by J. Frank Dobie and published by Pelican Publishing Company. This book was released on 1995-08-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's treasure buried beneath Texas soil or stowed in caves covered over by stones. It might be the mother lode that's waiting to be uncovered or some Spanish pirate's chest of jewels and doubloons. Nearby a ghostly figure walks the dunes, or is it just an illusion brought on by the approaching dust storm? In this new mass market edition, J. Frank Dobie has collected accounts of some of the best known tales of booty hidden in Texas hill and dale as well as some eerie stories and the origins of Texas flowers, names, and streams. You will learn about "The Enchanted Rock in Llano County," "Lafitte's Treasure Vault," and "The Holy Spring of Father Margil at Nacogdoches." These lively stories reveal the love for adventure, independence, and mystery that has made Texas the state it is. And just as Dobie hoped, with these tales readers from all over can see the "richness of their own traditions." Dobie believed that worthwhile literature about this region had to be derived from an understanding of its life, lore, and history. Legends of Texas indirectly led to the founding of the Texas Folklore Society, the nation's second oldest folklore organization.
