Book We Hold These Truths to Be Self Evident The National Guard and the Categorical Imperative

Download or read book We Hold These Truths to Be Self Evident The National Guard and the Categorical Imperative written by Anne C. Armstrong and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, Dr. Armstrong argues that a nation founded in Enlightenment theory can rely on Kant’s categorical imperative as a rationale for voluntary service in one’s local National Guard. Since the 19th century, a Utilitarian argument has been the favored rationale, but in We Hold These Truths to be Self-Evident: The National Guard and the Categorical Imperative Dr. Armstrong contends that there is also a normative rationale. The author traces Guard history from its inception in 1636 to the present day and applies Kant’s unchanging categorical imperative to volunteer service in the militias. She highlights that this is an ideal that is not always met by frail human beings but that the categorical imperative is always there, lurking in the historical record. With a thorough analysis of Kant’s reasoning, the theory is chronologically applied to volunteer service in the National Guard through the perspective of the leadership of each particular era. This book is ideal for the study of American history, Enlightenment philosophy, and political science. It will appeal to scholars and academics as well as officers in Professional Military Education (PME), service academies and War Colleges, and the National Defense University.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, covering 1945 to 1992, is the third of three volumes on the role of federal military forces in domestic disorders. Summarizing institutional and other changes that took place in the Army and in American society during this period, it carries the reader through the nation's use of federal troops during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s and the domestic upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s associated with the Vietnam War. The development and refinement of the Army's domestic support role, as well as the disciplined manner in which the Army conducted these complex and often unpopular tasks, are major themes of this volume. In addition, the study demonstrates the Army's progress in coordinating its operational and contingency planning with the activities of other federal agencies and the National Guard. --from the Foreword.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Twenty years after the 'long hot summer'... In February of this year, former Senator Fred Harris told a Today Show audience that the plight of black Americans has worsened since 1968, and the New York Times ran a feature article, '20 Years After the Kerner Report: Three Societies, All Separate." The famous Kerner Report shocked the nation almost as much as the rioting that had prompted President Johnson to appoint the commission, headed by Governor Kerner, in the first place. Tragically, its conclusions are only more valid and urgent today. The commission pointed to the continued polarization of society, the persistence of white racism, and other factors, and argued that only a 'compassionate, massive, and sustained' government effort could reverse the overall trend toward a racially divided, separate, and unequal society. In 1988 we can see the result of America's failure to confront these problems of racism and inequality."--

Book The Role of Federal Military Forces in Domestic Disorders 1877 1945

Download or read book The Role of Federal Military Forces in Domestic Disorders 1877 1945 written by Clayton David Laurie and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1997 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1904, this forgotten classic is sci-fi and dystopia at its best, written by the creator and master of the genre Following extensive research in the field of "growth," Mr. Bensington and Professor Redwood light upon a new mysterious element, a food that causes greatly accelerated development. Initially christening their discovery "The Food of the Gods," the two scientists are overwhelmed by the possible ramifications of their creation. Needing room for experiments, Mr. Besington chooses a farm that offers him the chance to test on chickens, which duly grow monstrous, six or seven times their usual size. With the farmer, Mr. Skinner, failing to contain the spread of the Food, chaos soon reigns as reports come in of local encounters with monstrous wasps, earwigs, and rats. The chickens escape, leaving carnage in their wake. The Skinners and Redwoods have both been feeding their children the compound illicitly—their eventual offspring will constitute a new age of giants. Public opinion rapidly turns against the scientists and society rebels against the world's new flora and fauna. Daily life has changed shockingly and now politicians are involved, trying to stamp out the Food of the Gods and the giant race. Comic and at times surprisingly touching and tragic, Wells' story is a cautionary tale warning against the rampant advances of science but also of the dangers of greed, political infighting, and shameless vote-seeking.
