Book excerpt: With heart, intelligence and a rare ability to illuminate the struggles inherent in ordinary lives, Tom Perrotta's The Leftovers—now adapted into an HBO series—is a startling, thought-provoking novel about love, connection and loss. What if—whoosh, right now, with no explanation—a number of us simply vanished? Would some of us collapse? Would others of us go on, one foot in front of the other, as we did before the world turned upside down? That's what the bewildered citizens of Mapleton, who lost many of their neighbors, friends and lovers in the event known as the Sudden Departure, have to figure out. Because nothing has been the same since it happened—not marriages, not friendships, not even the relationships between parents and children. Kevin Garvey, Mapleton's new mayor, wants to speed up the healing process, to bring a sense of renewed hope and purpose to his traumatized community. Kevin's own family has fallen apart in the wake of the disaster: his wife, Laurie, has left to join the Guilty Remnant, a homegrown cult whose members take a vow of silence; his son, Tom, is gone, too, dropping out of college to follow a sketchy prophet named Holy Wayne. Only Kevin's teenaged daughter, Jill, remains, and she's definitely not the sweet "A" student she used to be. Kevin wants to help her, but he's distracted by his growing relationship with Nora Durst, a woman who lost her entire family on October 14th and is still reeling from the tragedy, even as she struggles to move beyond it and make a new start. Book excerpt: An oral history in the vein of Please Kill Me Leftöver Crack is a band of drug abusing, dumpster diving, cop-hating, queer positive, pro-choice, crust punks that successfully blend ska-punk, pop, hip-hop and death metal genres. They've been banned from clubs, states and counties and kicked off multiple record labels. They've received teen-idol adoration and death threats from their fans. They've played benefits for a multitude of causes while leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. But, if you dig below the crusty, black metal-patch encased surface, you'll find a contemplative, nuanced band that, quite literally, permanently changed the punk rock community. By combining catchy ska-punk with lyrics that referenced political theorist Michael Parenti, drug usage, and suicide, the band formed a unique mélange that was both provocative and challenging. In fact, the band's hooks were so sharp that after releasing their debut LP, Mediocre Generica, an entire culture of "Crack City Rockers" grew around the band, pushing the youth towards both the positive and negative aspects of extreme punk rock. Of course, being the combustible band that they are, the band has gotten involved in its far share of fiascoes: full-scale riots in Phoenix and NYC, getting punched out by their own fans, showing up to tour Florida with machetes after receiving death threats from the local gang. Architects of Self-Destruction: An Oral History of Leftöver Crack traces the band's entire history by speaking to the band members themselves, fellow musicians, their fans, and of course, those that still hold a grudge against the LoC... FYI, that's a lot of people.

Book Below the Surface

Download or read book Below the Surface written by Kevin Firth and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2015-09-08 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Below the Surface is an adventure memoir detailing my experiences as a commercial mixed gas deep sea bell diver in the North Sea during the mid-1970s. The book captures the harrowing and near-death experiences I survived at the very bottom of one of the world’s coldest bodies of water. My story begins with a sometimes violent childhood in 1950s working class northern England. Brought up by two deaf parents, my siblings and I found resourceful ways to cope with poverty in this bleak industrial landscape. Yearning for more, I joined the Royal Navy in 1967 at age fifteen. This is where I learned my trade and began a lifetime of living at sea. But the thrills of this new world were met with the challenges of loneliness and disconnection from family. Emigrating to Canada in the mid-1980s, I found myself working on one of the most challenging jobs anyone could face: bringing up the famed Ocean Ranger oil rig from its untimely place of rest. The largest floating oil rig in the world sank in the exploratory oil fields off the grand banks of Newfoundland. These tumultuous waters have taken many famous ships to an early grave, the Titanic being the most famous. Many similarities exist between the two vessels, but with the Ocean Ranger, no one survived.

  • Author : Norm Wolford
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse

  • ISBN : 1524684384
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book The Wine of My Life written by Norm Wolford and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2017-04-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it all about? What is wine made from? What is in it? What are we drinking? One substance makes up 80 percent of every single bottle of wine. Can you guess what that 80 percent is? It is not grapes. It is not sugar. Its water! In fact, all manufactured beverages are in the neighborhood of 80 percent water. This is one of the very basics: that wine uses water as a carrier as the base. Of course, we too are made up of 75 percent 80 percent water! Let us clarify; wine makers do not add water to the wine they make to reach 80 percent. This is simply the natural proportion of water in wine. Choose a single grape, and that grape is 75 percent to 85 percent water. Therefore, that is where it begins. Theres no water added; it just comes naturally with the grape. The nature of water itself is another whole story, but it is true that water is colorless and odorless. It can be in three states: liquid, gas, and solid. The atom of water is so unique and is one of the strongest of the atoms. It takes so much energy to be able to break it apart. Water is life itself, and water is the first and the most basic aspect of wine.

I'm an extremely curious chap and with this book I wanted to share the content of my noggin, because I think these are the 147 things that have helped me through this thing we call life. Sometimes because it shows how lucky we are to be here at all, but often because I’m a moron and learned whatever lesson it taught me the hard way, and I’d like to save you the pain of making the same mistakes (I refer here to the waxing of my pubic hair). Ever wondered if first times are over-rated (hint: they are), whether you’ll ever find the one (hint: there are 7 billion of us) or pondered the sheer unlikelihood of the you who is you being in the world right now? If so, then YouTube superstar and fact-obsessed, over-sharer Jim Chapman is here to explain it all – whether it’s why your heart actually aches after a break-up, what’s happening when you get hangry, or why people are just so plain RUDE online. Along the way, we’ll find out how much fun he has when Tanya’s sleep-talking and why he looked like a gangly T-rex with wonky teeth when he was a teenager. As with his videos, no subject is off-limits, as Jim lifts the lid on his life and his relationships, sharing embarrassing stories and things he’s learnt along the way (trust us, the thing about kangaroos will really freak you out).

Book excerpt: They were an inseparable tribe of childhood friends whose world was torn apart by the First World War. Some were lost in battle, and those who survived have had their lives unimaginably upended, scattered to Ceylon and India, France and Germany, and, inevitably, back to Britain. Now, at the dawn of the 1920s, all are trying to pick up the pieces. At the center of Louis de Bernières’s riveting novel are Daniel, an RAF flying ace, and Rosie, a wartime nurse. As their marriage is slowly revealed to be built on lies, Daniel finds solace—and, sometimes, family—with other women, and Rosie draws her religion around herself like a carapace. Here too are Rosie’s sisters—a bohemian, a minister’s wife, and a spinster, each seeking purpose and happiness in her own unconventional way; and Daniel’s military brother, unable to find his footing in a peaceful world. Told in brief, dramatic chapters, So Much Life Left Over follows the stories of these old friends over the decades as their paths re-cross or their ties fray, as they test loyalties and love, face survivor’s grief and guilt, and adjust to a new world.

Download or read book The Lost Tree Of Life written by Don Johnson and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2014-01-04 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Beaver Village Pit in Alaska, where botanist Kenai Cranston searches for extinct plants within the frozen tundra of The Last Frontier. During his research Cranston discovers seeds from the Garden Of Eden's Tree Of Life. The tree's seeds are stolen and the fight for the fruit is the beginning of what could become World War III. The Lost Tree takes an intensely personal look at a wide range of human relationships and personality extremes. Characters run from outrageously callous to the extremely tender. The story chronicles senseless human greed mixed with the humor of trying to obtain excessive wealth. Great care is shown in closely tracking mankind's history, while suggesting possible earthly and heavenly mechanisms, which could have been used in generating that history. The Lost Tree Of Life is a fictional account of what may have been going on behind the scenes during some of mankind's most amazing history.
