Download or read book Left Handed Poetry from a Right Handed Poet written by Tracey Odessa Kane and published by Rowanvale Books. This book was released on 2015-11-30 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes, in order to find your way, To begin to see the light, You have to pick up the pen and find something more, Using the hand with which you don’t normally write. To live the life you dream of living, to be your best you, you’re going to have to do something different, something that you’ve never done before. What will you do? Where will your journey truly begin? Tracey Odessa Kane has always been fascinated with hands. She believes they show a lot about a person, and as a right-handed poet, has always wondered if she began to write left-handed, would her work – the things she writes about, her passions, the tone and the quality – be different, or the same? Would her voice be identifiable or unrecognisable? And so, just a few short years ago, she began writing with her left hand. This was not always easy, but Kane persisted and having finally mastered this new ability, Left Handed Poetry from a Right Handed Poet was born. Writing in such a way had unleashed a voice with hidden depths; a voice that was desperate to be heard, and will beckon you to look deeper into life, into purpose, and into our why.

Book excerpt: Sometimes, in order to find your way, To begin to see the light, You have to pick up the pen and find something more, using the hand with which you don't normally write. You see, this life that we all live, it's a breath-taking, heart-breaking thing; a conundrum of epic proportion, and that's just on its most average of days! It is a sonnet that never ends, a painting that we will never live long enough to see completed. It is a story we will never get to read the end of, a ballad we will only ever remember in part and thus hum in childlike fashion. And yet, it is completely, irrevocably, spellbinding and beautiful. To live the life you dream of living, to be your best you, you're going to have to do something different, something that you've never done before. What will you do? Where will your journey truly begin? Perhaps it starts here, when you begin reading this book, when you walk in my shoes for a day.

Book Left Handed Poetry

Download or read book Left Handed Poetry written by Linda Lamenza and published by . This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Left-Handed Poetry weaves poems of pain and healing through a traumatic accident involving the poet as pedestrian, and a vehicle. It combines both the medical and emotional experience of being hit by a car. From on the pavement to learning how to write with a non-dominant hand, this collection takes us on a poet's passage from tragedy to hope. She learns how to function effectively from her non-dominant right-brain and offers small pearls reflecting on both life and death from the hemispheric opposite lens of her usual daily routines. Left-Handed Poetry was a finalist for the Hunger Mountain May Day Chapbook series.

Download or read book Left Handed Through Time written by John H. Baldwin and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author is not left-handed. He has however, been the outsider, the late comer, the wrong color (the wrong color can be white at times), under dressed, over dressed, misplaced, out of step, out of sorts, out of cash, out of style, too young, too old, too short, too anxious, too stubborn, and wishy-washy. You will note that none of these things are fatal and many of them noticed by few. But they all, can and do, make one wonder about the comfort of having a good fit. My understanding is that this is a way of life for the left handed folks who live in this right handed world. They get by, and do it by using a slightly different grip. People seldom notice, but it is a different grip. I feel that I have a left-handed grip on, or view of, the world. The problems are evident but I must tell you, that in compensation, I have views of life that most folks don´t, and these views give me wonder. This wonder I will share with you. Left Handed Through Time is an easy to read compilation of poetry of all descriptions. Rhymed and metered or free verse, serious or humorous, predictable or surprising, modest or suggestive. The common thread is that first and foremost you will understand exactly what the poet is saying and you will know exactly what he means there is nothing hidden or obscure. If you want a mystery book, or to test your intelligence by being able to parse meaning from convoluted phrasing and obscure allusion, go elsewhere. If you want to enjoy an idea, a view, a romantic moment, humor, or an adventure, just read on. Left Handed is divided into chapters that, to the author, seemed most conducive to the readers enjoyment and understanding. They provide a thread of continuity for the included poems. The early chapters are devoted to the last ten years of the authors life. What Was Then is concerned with his married life and its ending. Through The Singles in many ways describes the trials and tribulations of mature adults who find themselves alone for whatever reason, and dont particularly like it. Whats Now happily tells about the problems and joys in finding of the significant other (what a horrible term) that one vitally needs to have the fullest life possible. The remaining chapters are titled by their themes or content. Love and Romance no question. Look and See are nature poems. Entertain has poems whose sole purpose is to do just that. Have a Thought is a chapter of poems that will give you a different view or maybe just give you pause. Introspection contains poems that are personal to the author and his experience. And finely, Stories has poems of adventure and drama.

Book Chicano Poetry

  • Author : Juan Bruce-Novoa
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2014-02-20

Download or read book Chicano Poetry written by Juan Bruce-Novoa and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-02-20 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alurista. Gary Soto. Bernice Zamora. José Montoya. These names, luminous to some, remain unknown to those who have not yet discovered the rich variety of late twentieth century Chicano poetry. With the flowering of the Chicano Movement in the mid-1960s came not only increased political awareness for many Mexican Americans but also a body of fine creative writing. Now the major voices of Chicano literature have begun to reach the wider audience they deserve. Bruce-Novoa's Chicano Poetry: A Response to Chaos—the first booklength critical study of Chicano poetry—examines the most significant works of a body of literature that has grown dramatically in size and importance in less than two decades. Here are insightful new readings of the major writings of Abelardo Delgado, Sergio Elizondo, Rodolfo Gonzales, Miguel Méndez, J. L. Navarro, Raúl Salinas, Ricardo Sánchez, and Tino Villanueva, as well as Alurista, Soto, Zamora, and Montoya. Close textual analyses of such important works as I Am Joaquín, Restless Serpents, and Floricanto en Aztlán enrich and deepen our understanding of their imagery, themes, structure, and meaning. Bruce-Novoa argues that Chicano poetry responds to the threat of loss, whether of hero, barrio, family, or tradition. Thus José Montoya elegizes a dead Pachuco in "El Louie," and Raúl Salinas laments the disappearance of a barrio in "A Trip through the Mind Jail." But this elegy at the heart of Chicano poetry is both lament and celebration, for it expresses the group's continuing vitality and strength. Common to twentieth-century poetry is the preoccupation with time, death, and alienation, and the work of Chicano poets—sometimes seen as outside the traditions of world literature—shares these concerns. Bruce-Novoa brilliantly defines both the unique and the universal in Chicano poetry.

Book Exorcising Philosophical Modernity

Download or read book Exorcising Philosophical Modernity written by Philip John Paul Gonzales and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-03-18 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What should Christian discourse look like after philosophical modernity? In one manner or another the essays in this volume seek to confront and intellectually exorcise the prevailing elements of philosophical modernity, which are inherently transgressive disfigurations and refigurations of the Christian story of creation, sin, and redemption. To enact these various forms and styles of Christian intellectual exorcism the essays in this volume make appeal to, and converse with, the magisterial corpus of Cyril O’Regan. The themes of the essays center around the gnostic return in modernity, apocalyptic theology, and the question of the bounds and borders of Christian orthodoxy. Along the way diverse figures are treated such as: Hegel, Shakespeare, von Balthasar, Przywara, Ricouer, Deleuze, Merleau-Ponty, and Kristeva. Exorcising Philosophical Modernity: Cyril O’Regan and Christian Discourse after Modernity is a veritable feast of post-modern Christian thought.

Book Drafting and Assessing Poetry

Download or read book Drafting and Assessing Poetry written by Sue Dymoke and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2003-01-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `This excellent book provides the reader with comprehensive coverage of all aspect of poetry teaching. The book does more than inform us - it inspires profound reflection on the best ways it support poetry writing and draws us into the debate about assessment-driven curriculum′ - School Librarian `A must for trainee teachers and English departments′ - Booktrusted News `Drafting and Assessing Poetry is thoroughly researched and shows how attitudes towards teaching of poetry and indeed the place of poetry on the syllabus, has changed with political fashion over the years, but more importantly, Sue Dymoke shows how a handful of contemporary poets go about drafting their work and sees this process as an essential tool in the classroom, advocating that students should keep drafting notebooks, just like real writers. Getting students, or indeed members of writing groups, to understand that one draft of a poem may not be the final or best work they can produce will never be a problem again!′ - Writing in Education `Sue Dymoke′s book is a much needed antidote to the ubiquitous guides to poetry analysis.... This book is well worth reading for its clarity and wealth of ideas′ - Bethan Marshall, TES Teacher Magazine `Every English department should buy this remarkably comprehensive book. Inspiring approaches for teaching children to write poetry are clearly described. Sue Dymoke draws upon her extensive experience as a poet, English teacher and researcher to explore the place of writing poetry in English lessons and examinations. Her unique insights into both the writing and teaching of poetry should prove invaluable to English teachers′ - Dr Mark Pike, Lecturer in English Education and Head of PGCE English, University of Leeds `It is a useful book: a theoretical text, but with a practical focus, which makes it very readable and interesting, to teachers of young people particularly, but also, to teachers of adults and indeed in parts to poetry writers themselves, particularly those interested in working in schools, or simply curious about the general process of drafting and evaluating poetry′ - County Lit, Nottinghamshire County Council Literature Newsletter Drafting and Assessing Poetry offers a range of teaching strategies for developing students′ poetry writing skills, and guidance about assessment approaches. Critical commentaries combine with illustrations of successful classroom practice to consider this essential but under-explored aspect of English teaching. Based on theory but with a practical dimension, the book engages readers in current critical debates about poetry teaching and its place in an assessment- driven curriculum. This book is for reflective practitioners, including trainee teachers, who want to develop their understanding of poetry teaching and to gain insights, which will inform classroom practice. It will also be useful for literacy co-ordinators, teacher educators and other advisory staff in the field of English teaching.

Book The Ekphrastic Encounter in Contemporary British Poetry and Elsewhere

Download or read book The Ekphrastic Encounter in Contemporary British Poetry and Elsewhere written by David Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining a wide range of ekphrastic poems, David Kennedy argues that contemporary British poets writing out of both mainstream and avant-garde traditions challenge established critical models of ekphrasis with work that is more complex than representational or counter-representational responses to paintings in museums and galleries. Even when the poem appears to be straightforwardly representational, it is often selectively so, producing a 'virtual' work that doesn't exist in actuality. Poets such as Kelvin Corcoran, Peter Hughes, and Gillian Clarke, Kennedy suggests, relish the ekphrastic encounter as one in which word and image become mutually destabilizing. Similarly, other poets engage with the source artwork as a performance that participates in the ethical realm. Showing that the ethical turn in ekphrastic poetry is often powerfully gendered, Kennedy also surveys a range of ekphrastic poets from the Renaissance and nineteenth century to trace a tradition of female ekphrastic poetry that includes Pauline Stainer and Frances Presley. Kennedy concludes with a critique of ekphrastic exercises in creative writing teaching, proposing that ekphrastic writing that takes greater account of performance spectatorship may offer more fruitful models for the classroom than the narrativizing of images.
