Book The Leeward Islands

Download or read book The Leeward Islands written by Lisa Kozleski and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, the Leeward Islands extend from Puerto Rico to the Windward Islands, forming part of the Lesser Antilles chain. Residents and tourists alike bask in the islands' warm trade winds and year-round sunshine; tropical rain forests, dazzling coral reefs, and white, gold, or pink sand beaches attract visitors from around the world. Two independent countries, Antigua and Barbuda, and St. Kitts and Nevis, are among the 15 islands that make up the Leeward Islands. Other well-known tourist sites include the British dependencies Anguilla and Montserrat, and territories claimed by the Dutch (St. Eustatius, Saba, and Sint Maarten) and French (Guadeloupe). The many popular tourist resorts on these islands play a powerful role in the economy, as do offshore banking and lobster fishing. Book jacket.

Book Cruising Guide to the Leeward Islands

Download or read book Cruising Guide to the Leeward Islands written by Chris Doyle and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fair winds and fine cruising is author Chris Doyle's wish for readers of this popular, newly updated guide to the 10 island nations of this enchanting Caribbean chain.Doyle's background in research makes this volume rich in practical details; yet its tone is conversational. His is also an intimate knowledge, gathered from more than 20 years of live-aboard Caribbean cruising on his Carib 41 Helos, a former charterboat. The Leewards are a cultural and topographic mix, and Doyle addresses them by geographical grouping. The Renaissance Islands (St. Martin, St. Barts and Anguilla), an economically strong bareboating enclave, offer short cruising passages and a wide choice of anchorages. The Islands That Brush the Clouds - a volcanic chain strung between Saba and Montserrat - present cruisers with a variety of channels and terrain. Most broadly strewn are the Islands of Mountains and Mangroves, a patchwork chiefly of rugged rainforest and exotic fauna, guarded in spots by spectacular reefs. The southern Leewards in particular have cried for reliable charting. Doyle provides aid throughout, using GPS coordinates, a trove of charts and color maps. All are cross-referenced with the newly released Caribbean Yachting Charts, exactingly detailed and available through Cruising Guide Publications. Spectacular photographs add a visual feast.Onshore accommodations, transportation, communications, entertainment and provisioning are also addressed throughout the guide, and in an exhaustive directory by island and service type.

Book The West Indies Before and Since Slave Emancipation

Download or read book The West Indies Before and Since Slave Emancipation written by John Davy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Davy (1790-1868) was an English doctor and brother of the chemist Sir Humphrey Davy. After graduating from Edinburgh University, in 1814 Davy became Inspector General of Army Hospitals, and he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1834. In his capacity as Inspector General, he spent 1845-1848 living in Barbados and visiting other Caribbean Islands. This volume, first published in 1854, describes the society and culture of Barbados and other islands, including Trinidad, Tobago and St Lucia. Based on Davy's notes and observations made while stationed on the island, the book describes in vivid detail the disparities in education, quality of life and behaviour between the freed slaves, indentured servants and plantation owners of Barbados and other islands. Davy's sympathetic account provides valuable first-hand descriptions of the social conditions and tensions which existed after the Emancipation Act of 1834.
