They have been somewhat altered in form, with the view of rendering them more suitable for publication, and much new matter has been added. The lectures, though not systematic in point of form, are intended to raise and discuss most of the problems of diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment which confront the practitioner in the field of thoracic disease. Difficulties of diagnosis have received special attention. The object of the lectures is practical, and the clinical standpoint has been adopted throughout. Two lectures - viz. I. and II. - are included in this volume which are not directly concerned with diseases of the lungs and the heart, but rather with the theory of clinical observation and the philosophy of medicine in general.
