The timeframe of the continued surveys with R/V DR. FRIDTJOF NANSEN and the support through the Nansen Programme is unknown and high priority must therefore be given to the improvement of scientists skills in acoustic abundance estimation.

Book excerpt: The report finds that all of the local research vessels conducted acoustic surveys in 2005 and major improvements have been made in standardisation of procedures and processing of data. Some problems still persist, such as problems with trawling using the pelagic trawl and problems related to noise levels, but these issues are now being addressed. Plans were made for a second parallel survey and intercalibration exercise to take place in October- December 2005. It was recommended that the countries in the Northwest African region, Senegal, the Gambia, Mauritania and Morocco should co-ordinate their survey effort to conduct two annual regional acoustic surveys, during the cold and warm seasons respectively.

The second section starts with discussions of the developments in the construction of ships, navigational aids, waterways and harbors, traffic management and installations, with particular emphasis on risk analysis and safety criteria regarding transportation, unloading, and storage of liquefied natural and petroleum gases. Other topics covered in this section include economic optimization of the whole dredging cycle; cargo handling systems and equipment; design and construction of port facilities and arrangement of quay platforms; and coastal erosion caused by harbor works and corrective measures. First interned as an 'Enemy Alien', then taken prisoner by the Germans after the invasion, he resolves to reach England, which takes him another three years. Conscripted into the Vichy Army he manages to escape after two and a half years, goes into hiding before crossing the Pyrenees, when the Germans had occupied the whole of France. Interned in Spain, he joins the American Quakers in Madrid on relief work, after they obtained his release from the 'Miranda' internment camp. On the last leg of his journey into freedom, arranged by the British Embassy, he leaves for Britain by convoy from Gibraltar to join HM Forces in 1943. Assigned to the Intelligence Corps, his story continues until his demobilisation in 1947.
