Download or read book That Paris Year written by Joanna Biggar and published by Santa Fe Writers Project. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In That Paris Year, five smart, adventurous young women arrive on the banks of the Seine in 1962 for their junior year abroad. What they get is an education of a different sort. As they move from the grueling demands of the Sorbonne by day to late nights of discovery in smoky cafes, the young Americans discover a mythical country shaped not only by the upheavals of history, but by the great French writers of the 20th Century, a place where seduction is intellectual as well as sexual. Ten years later, our narrator, J. J., is asked to speak at her old college on the virtues of going abroad. Drawing on the emotionally charged tools of memory and imagination, as well as old journals, letters, and telegrams, she chronicles and re-creates the story of that momentous year. Following in the footsteps of Marcel Proust, Joanna Biggar has written a novel in which intellect, eroticism, and art reverberate from the page to the heartbeat of the City of Light, an American book with the sweep and elegance of French literary tradition.
Download or read book Translating the Past written by Anne Dawson Hedeman and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1409 Laurent de Premierfait produced a French translation of Giovanni Boccaccio s "De casibus virorum illustrium," a fourteenth-century text containing cautionary historical tales that exemplify the corrupting effects of power. Richly illustrated copies of the translation, known as "Des cas des nobles hommes et femmes," became enormously popular, allowing for a consideration not only of how Boccaccio s Latin made its way into Laurent s French but also how the text was converted into visual images. In "Translating the Past," art historian Anne D. Hedeman traces the history of Laurent s work from the first copies made for the dukes of Berry and Burgundy to manuscripts independently produced by artists and booksellers in Paris. In certain cases, masterpieces resulted, such as the copy owned by the J. Paul Getty Museum, which was painted around 1415 by the Boucicaut Master under King Charles VII of France."
Download or read book The Brasseries of Paris written by Francois Thomazeau and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A brasserie is where the pleasure of the eye is reunited with the pleasures of the table.” In the sparkling brasseries of Paris, waiters in traditional long white aprons balance overflowing trays as they weave their way through beautiful Art Deco and Art Nouveau dining rooms with stained glass windows, romantic femmes-fleurs murals, glistening mirrors. The traditional menu—a lighter version of the pricier dishes served in “real” restaurants—includes choucroute, steak-frites, towering fresh seafood platters, and soups from bouillabaise to onion. “Brasseries rustle with all that makes Parisian life Parisian,” writes the author in this charming guide, first published in France, which will lead travelers to the best of these beloved institutions.

Download or read book Paris France written by Gertrude Stein and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2013-06-24 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matched only by Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast, Paris France is a "fresh and sagacious" (The New Yorker) classic of prewar France and its unforgettable literary eminences. Celebrated for her innovative literary bravura, Gertrude Stein (1874–1946) settled into a bustling Paris at the turn of the twentieth century, never again to return to her native America. While in Paris, she not only surrounded herself with—and tirelessly championed the careers of—a remarkable group of young expatriate artists but also solidified herself as "one of the most controversial figures of American letters" (New York Times). In Paris France (1940)—published here with a new introduction from Adam Gopnik—Stein unites her childhood memories of Paris with her observations about everything from art and war to love and cooking. The result is an unforgettable glimpse into a bygone era, one on the brink of revolutionary change.
