Such a text as this, however, was needed because the original index is arranged solely by the names each transaction was registered under. In most cases, many more names lie within the body of the document. The author of this book has endeavored to make every recorded name accessible, via index, to aid the researcher. These records identify family members (and relationships) for both white and black families in Davidson County between 13 February 1829 and 27 August 1835, a time when the census identified only the white "head of household;" a time when many wills identified only the husband, leaving his property "to my beloved wife and children;" a time when there was no other record for the slave family. The book's index listing refers to the original deed book page entry. Included are the deed records, whose inventories of personal property give a truly unique picture of the society of the day. Indexes cover first and last names, slave names, and places.

They did not make an abstraction but entered the full text of each deed. This gives a great deal more information than just an abstraction, so the reader gains more than usual. Sometimes the type is blurred, but with a little patience can be read easily. We chose to present the materials in this fashion to avoid any more mistakes in transcription. The W.P.A. workers in Marion County following the depression in 1938 transcribed the full text of the first two of the county deed books and typed them with several onion skin carbons. We obtained one of these copies and chose to leave the original as it was written to prevent any more errors than were present in the beginning. The full text of each deed is transcribed and typed into the material so the reader has a chance to see the full deed as written. This is very important in the research of the materials. - from the publisher.

Book excerpt: Although Tennessee was given statehood in 1796, certain subsequent developments delayed finalization of land grants, and most landholders in Blount County did not receive clear title to their lands until 1806. On February 7, 1807, the Commissioners of Blount County, Tennessee, ordered that the register's book of deeds be transcribed into a larger and more complete book. Over a period of years, ending August 31, 1878, other deed books were transcribed into the same book, which was then designated 'Book 1.' As a convenience for the reader, each deed is numbered. Numbers in parentheses indicate the page number of Book 1 on which the deed is found. The first date shown is the date the deed was written; second is the date of registration. Then follows the amount or type of consideration paid, description of the property, and signatures of the seller and witnesses. Signatures made by a 'mark' are indicated '(X).' Date of acknowledgment before the court is not shown unless it was deemed to have some genealogical significance. A full-name index adds to the value of this work.
