Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Satirical Writing Subsequent to Juvenal This volume represents in a somewhat enlarged and revised form a dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Yale University, in candidacy for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, in 1911. The subject for investigation was suggested to me by Professor G. L. Hendrickson, who has given me much valuable advice and criticism, both in general and in particular. CLAUDIAN Claudius Claudianus, a poet of classical caliber in postclassical times, or "the posthumous child of the classical world," as Mackail calls him,1 was the most important literary figure of his age. He was an Alexandrian by birth, and was born about 374 A. D.2 He wrote in Greek in his early years; and the high degree of excellence which he attained in Latin is the all more remarkable because it was not his native tongue. He came to Rome about 394 or 395 and attached himself to wealthy and influential patrons. His first Latin poem of which we have knowledge was a panegyric on Probinus and Olybrius, consuls in 395. The excellence of his work makes it probable indeed that he had written Latin poetry before this occasion, but this was the first to be published.3 He soon became a follower of Stilicho, the powerful and able minister of the western Emperor Honorius, and remained consistently loyal to him. Praise of Stilicho is the underlying theme of almost all his important poems. He occupied what amounted to a position of Poet Laureate at the imperial court, and in spite of his partisanship in favor of Stilicho, his poems are of considerable value in the reconstruction of the history of the period.4 The date of Claudian's death is unknown; but the absence of any work dating later than about 404 is best explained on the supposition that that year was his last.6 He was then still a young man, aged barely thirty years, and yet ranks among the greatest of Roman poets. 1 Latin Literature, 267. 2 Birt, Prolegomena to his edition of the text, pp. iii, xii. 3Vollmer in Pauly-Wissowa's Realencyclopddie, 3, 2652; Birt, Prolegomena, viii; Claudian, Carmina minora, 41, 13 ff. 4 J. Book Claudian s In Eutropium

Download or read book Claudian s In Eutropium written by Jacqueline Long and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From A.D. 395 to 404, Claudian was the court poet of the Western Roman Empire, ruled by Honorius. In 399 the eunuch Eutropius, the grand chamberlain and power behind the Eastern Roman throne of Honorius's brother Arcadius, became consul. The poem In Eutropium is Claudian's brilliantly nasty response. In it he vilifies Eutropius and calls on Honorius's general, Stilicho, to redeem this disgrace to Roman honor. In this literary and historical study, Jacqueline Long argues that the poem was, in both intent and effect, political propaganda: Claudian exploited traditional prejudices against eunuchs to make Eutropius appear ludicrously alien to the ideals of Roman greatness. Long sets In Eutropium within the context of Greek and Roman political vituperation and satire from the classical to the late antique period. In addition, she demonstrates that the poem is an invaluable, if biased, source of historical information about Eutropius's career. Her analysis draws on modern propaganda theory and on reader response theory, thereby bringing a fresh perspective to the political implications of Claudian's work. Originally published in 1996.
