Book Premature Failure of Latex Modified Concrete Bridge Deck Overlays in Ohio

Download or read book Premature Failure of Latex Modified Concrete Bridge Deck Overlays in Ohio written by Osama Ahmed Abdulshafi and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an investigation of the cause(s) of premature failure of latex modified concrete (LMC) bridge deck overlays in Ohio. Data and materials for 93 bridge decks overlaid with LMC were collected from five Ohio Department of Transportation Districts. Additional materials were collected and evaluations were conducted through monitoring the construction of seven LMC bridge deck overlays. Overall documentation and evaluation of the overlays and materials obtained are discussed; this includes field survey activities, construction monitoring and laboratory testing and analysis. Characteristics of the LMC mixtures and materials are evaluated and compared to acceptable standards. General findings were that most of the problems were due to the underlying old deck which was contaminated with chloride ions, previously undetected due to insufficient testing. Other conclusions are presented separately under construction monitoring, field surveys, and laboratory testing and analysis.

Download or read book Long term Performance of Polymer Concrete for Bridge Decks written by David W. Fowler and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2011 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 423: Long-Term Performance of Polymer Concrete for Bridge Decks addresses a number of topics related to thin polymer overlays (TPOs). Those topics include previous research, specifications, and procedures on TPOs; performance of TPOs based on field applications; the primary factors that influence TPO performance; current construction guidelines for TPOs related to surface preparation, mixing and placement, consolidation, finishing, and curing; repair procedures; factors that influence the performance of overlays, including life-cycle cost, benefits and costs, bridge deck condition, service life extension, and performance; and successes and failures of TPOs, including reasons for both.

Book Styrene butadiene Latex Modifiers for Bridge Deck Overlay Concrete

Download or read book Styrene butadiene Latex Modifiers for Bridge Deck Overlay Concrete written by Kenneth C. Clear and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Styrene-butadiene (S/B) latex modified concrete overlays are being used to protect new bridge decks from rapid deicer-borne chloride intrusion and also in bridge deck rehabilitation efforts. The purposes of this research were to evaluate several commercially-available S/B latex modifiers for bridge deck overlay concrete; and to develop chemical specifications for the material, a prequalification program to permit evaluation of other S/B latex modifiers which become available, and a certification program to insure the user receives a prequalified product. The chemical and physical properties of the latex emulsions were studied (percent solids, percent butadiene, particle size, surface tension, viscosity, etc.) and the material from each manufacturer was finger printed using infrared spectroscopy. The physical properties of concrete made with each material were also determined (workability, strength-compressive, flexural and bond, freeze-thaw and scaling resistance, and chloride permeability).

Book Twenty Year Performance of Latex Modified Concrete Overlays

Download or read book Twenty Year Performance of Latex Modified Concrete Overlays written by MM. Sprinkel and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteen bridge decks with latex-modified concrete (LMC) overlays ranging in age from two to twenty years and two overlays without latex were studied. The high quality portland cement concrete overlays without latex showed greater negative increases in half-cell potentials, greater increases in chloride content, and a higher percentage of higher rates of corrosion than the LMC overlays. Also, for these two bridges, higher shear and tensile rupture strengths were obtained at the bond interface with LMC than with concrete without latex. Higher rupture strengths were not obtained on the other bridges because of the low strength of the scarified surface of the base concrete. The permeability, half-cell, chloride, rate-of-corrosion, and bond, strength data indicate that the overlays are performing satisfactorily. Also, LMC overlays placed on decks with less than 2 lb/yd3 (1.2 kg/m3) of chloride ion at the rebar can be expected to have a service life in excess of twenty years.

Book Polymer Modified Concretes in Bridge Deck Overlay Systems

Download or read book Polymer Modified Concretes in Bridge Deck Overlay Systems written by JM. Judy and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Premature failure of portland cement concrete bridge decks is of national concern, particularly in those areas where chloride residues accumulate in the concrete from winter deicing operations. West Virginia's research and field usage indicates that the application of a relatively thin (1 to 2-in.) overlay of portland cement concrete or mortar containing a latex modifier may result in a significant increase in the useful life of bridge decks. Eighteen structures, including both new construction and renovation of existing decks, have received the latex-modified concrete overlay. Results to date have been most encouraging.

Book Performance of Concrete Bridge Deck Overlays

Download or read book Performance of Concrete Bridge Deck Overlays written by Chris Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chloride-ions penetrating into bridge decks and corroding the steel have been a major problem. As the steel corrodes it exerts stresses on the surrounding concrete. When the stresses exceed the strength of the concrete, cracks or delaminations occur. This, of course, causes deterioration and spalling of bridge deck surfaces. Both the Latex and Iowa Method were used to repair bridge decks for this project. The concrete was removed down to the steel and replaced with approximately 1 1/2 inches of low slump or latex modified concrete. The removal of unsound concrete below the top layer of steel was sometimes necessary. The objective of this project was to determine if the bridge overlays would provide a cost effective method of rehabilitation. To do this, unsound and delaminated concrete was removed and replaced by an overlay of low slump or latex modified concrete.

Download or read book Latex modified Concretes and Mortars written by V. Ramakrishnan and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1992 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis wil be of interest to materials engineers, construction engineers, maintenance engineers, pavement contractors and others interested in the use of latex-modified mortars (LMM) and concretes ( LMC). Information is provided on material properties of various LMM and LMC, as well as current construction practices used for LMM and LMC. Potential applications for LMM and LMC are also included. The use of innovative modified portland cement mortars and concretes for construction and maintenance applications is growing. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the current state of the practice with respect to the use of latex-modified portland cement concretes and mortars. The extent of use of each material (including case histories), based on results of surveys of state highway agencies and a review of the literature, is summarized.
