At Nomunniburgh the sentiment of kinship, usuallyconfined to blood-relations, is extended by each of the citizens to all the rest. Family ties are not considered more close or more binding than the ties of co-citizenship. In fact, the proverb which says that "blood is thicker than water" does not apply here. In social intercourse, and in all the transactions between the citizens, the same is "brother, and sister, and mother," whether living under the one roof, and of one family or not. This extension of the feeling of kinship from the few to the many has, of course, when effectually carried out (and the teaching that all men are brethren forms part of the vital education), the most happy results. Many of the miseries and feuds which disturb social and political life arise from the habit of viewing with suspicion and distrust our neighbours and their doings; while much of the happiness of family life comes from the feeling that here, at any rate, we are safe from betrayal, and sure of more or less sympathy and support. Even among the most depraved it is not often brother will defraud brother, or a son ruin his father, at least wittingly. Further, it will readily be allowed, I think, that children, in large families, grow up with greater good-fellowship, and larger sympathies towards each other and the outside world, than those of small families. That it is not invariably the case I admit, but nevertheless the tendency is naturally in this direction. For in large circles the intercourse with others, of each member, being greater, the sympathetic instincts become widened, and this leads to more all-round sociability.
