Book Laser Fabricated Electro Optical Modulators in GaAs

Download or read book Laser Fabricated Electro Optical Modulators in GaAs written by L. Eldada and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-speed external modulators are necessary components for impressing signals onto lightwave carriers used in optical fibers for various transmission applications in telecommunications. III-V semiconductor waveguide electro-optic modulators offer the advantage of monolithic integration, which gives them an edge over lithium niobate modulators. We have used novel laser direct-writing techniques to masklessly define waveguide and electrode structures, and have fabricated an electro-optic polarization modulator in GaAs/AlGaAs. Our modulator exhibits a high extinction ratio and low value of Vpi.

Book Semiconductor Optical Modulators

Download or read book Semiconductor Optical Modulators written by Koichi Wakita and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of GaAs/ AIGaAs double heterostructure lasers has opened the door to a new age in the application of compound semiconductor materials to microwave and optical technologies. A variety and combination of semiconductor materials have been investigated and applied to present commercial uses with these devices operating at wide frequencies and wavelengths. Semiconductor modulators are typical examples of this technical evolutions and hsve been developed for commercial use. Although these have a long history to date, we are not aware of any book that details this evolution. Consequently, we have written a book to provide a comprehensive account of semiconductor modulators with emphasis on historical details and experimantal reports. The objective is to provide an up-to-date understanding of semiconductor modulators. Particular attention has been paid to multiple quantum well (MQW) modulators operating at long wavelengths, taking into account the low losses and dispersion in silica fibers occuring at around 1.3 and 1.55 mm. At the present time, MQW structures have been investigated but these have not been sufficiently developed to provide characteristic features which would be instructive enough for readers. One problem is the almost daily publication of papers on semiconductor modulators. Not only do these papers provide additional data, but they often modify the interpretations of particular concepts. Almost all chapters refer to the large number of published papers that can be consulted for future study.

Book excerpt: The frequency response of an optical guided-wave GaAs interferometer has been measured. The bandwidth of the interferometer biased at a null point was 2.2 GHz, limited by parasites. A small-signal bandwidth of approx 3 GHz can be inferred from this measurement for the case where the interferometer is biased to a linear operating point. This is the highest bandwidth yet reported for a guided-wave GaAs modulator. A surface-emitting GaInAsP/InP laser has been developed in which a monolithically integrated parabolic mirror is used to up-deflect the output of a buried-heterostructure laser. A threshold current as low as 12 mA and a differential quantum efficiency as high as 46 percent have been obtained. GaInAsP/InP distributed feedback lasers have been fabricated with a simple new design in which the grating is etched into the top of a mass-transported buried heterostructure. Single-frequency operation with side modes lower than -32 dB and threshold currents as low as 16 mA has been achieved. Single-mode InP p+-n--n+ slab-coupled rib waveguides capable of phase modulating, TE-polarized, 1.3-micrometer radiation have been fabricated. These guides should prove useful in the fabrication of two-guide coupler switches and interferometric modulators. Keywords: Electrooptical devices, Laser, Surface emitting laser, Interferometer modulator, Lasers buried heterostructure.

Book Integrated Optics Theory and Technology

Download or read book Integrated Optics Theory and Technology written by Robert G. Hunsperger and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Hunsperger's Integrated Optics is one of the few texts that is comprehensive and thorough enough for use both as a classroom text (practice problems are included) and as a specialist's reference. The gratifying success of the first two editions and the continuing rapid development of the field necessitated the writing of this third edition. All chapters have been revised and updated, and a new chapter, on quantum well devices, has been added. As in the previous editions, detailed descriptions of the phenomena, devices, and technology used in optical integrated circuits and their relationship to fiber optics are presented. The trend of telecommunications toward the use of single mode systems operating at the longer wavelengths of 1.3 and 1.55 μm is explained and documented with illustrations of recently developed devices and systems. Broader coverage of GaInAsP devices and optical integrated circuits is provided, and the new growth tech- niques of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) are described. A discussion of the extensive development of hybrid optical integrated circuits in lithium niobate is also included. From the reviews: I never had the opportunity of using Hunsperger as a text to teach from but after reading the present third edition, I think it must be a pleasure to do so. It is a good book because of its precise language and its didactic organization (with many clear tables), it is exhaustive in its details, and rigorous in its background; it is well suited for a graduate-level course.

Book Ultrashort Processes in Condensed Matter

Download or read book Ultrashort Processes in Condensed Matter written by Walter E. Bron and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Study Institute (AS!) considered a number offacets of the very rapidly advancing field of theoretical and experimental aspects of ultrashort processes in condensed matter. Common threads exist between a series of example cases. One major subgroup of topics involves the ultrashort dynamics of excitations of various "particles" produced through the interactions of condensed matter with ultrashort duration laser light. Examples ofthe excitations include electronic and hole carriers, electron-hole plasma, phonons, vibrons and rotons, two phonon states, and excitons. Experimentation on the dynamics of such excitations, are carried out in the bulk, at surfaces, in thin films, and in quantum wells. The dynamical steps which the excitations usually undergo include photo-excitation, local thermalization, particle-particle interaction, particle phonon interactions and eventual return to true thermal equilibrium. This ASI was organized to benefit particularly advanced graduate students, specifically, those near the end of their Ph.D. thesis projects, and also for postdoctoral scholars already active in the field. The overall organizational goal was centered around a set oftutorially based lectures intermingled with full scale discussion periods of equal time and importance as the lectures. The general discussion periods were designed to offer to the participants ample time to ask detailed questions and to make comments and contributions of their own. In order to complete the involvement of the participants a full length poster session was also held. A representative set of abstracts of these posters appear as an Appendix to the lectures.
