Download or read book Cultures of Memory in the Nineteenth Century written by Katherine Haldane Grenier and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection provides a long-overdue examination of the nineteenth century as a crucible of new commemorative practices. Distinctive memory cultures emerged during this period which would fundamentally reshape public and private practices of remembrance in the modern world. The essays in this volume bring together scholars of History, Literature, Art History, and Musicology to explore uses of memory in nineteenth-century empire-building and constructions of national identity, cultures of sentiment and mourning practices, and discourses of race and power. Contributors approach the topic through case studies of Europe, the United States, and the British Empire. Their analyses of nineteenth-century innovations in commemoration at both the personal and the larger civic and political levels will appeal to students and scholars of memory and of the nineteenth-century world.

Download or read book The Wedding Feast War written by Keith Smith and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2012-12-19 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last of the nine Frontier Wars fought between 17991877 was in many ways a prequel to the more famous Zulu War of 1879, featuring as it did many of the British regiments and personalities who were to fight at Isandlwana, as well as being the final defeat of the Xhosa people and their reduction to lowly workers for the colonists. This war saw conflict between the British authorities (the governor-general and the commander-in-chief) and the government of the Cape, leading to the dismissal of that government by Sir Bartle Frere, the Governor-General. This book has made extensive use of British Parliamentary Papers, official War Office dispatches and personal accounts and correspondence to tell the full story of this neglected yet fascinating episode of South African military history, which provides an insight into the origins of and attitudes of the principal figures in the following conflict with the Zulus.
Download or read book The British Empire 2 volumes written by Mark Doyle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential starting point for anyone wanting to learn about life in the largest empire in history, this two-volume work encapsulates the imperial experience from the 16th–21st centuries. From early sixteenth-century explorations to the handover of Hong Kong in 1997, the British Empire controlled outposts on every continent, spreading its people and ideas across the globe and profiting mightily in the process. The present state of our world—from its increasing interconnectedness to its vast inequalities and from the successful democracies of North America to the troubled regimes of Africa and the Middle East—can be traced, in large part, to the way in which Great Britain expanded and controlled its empire. The British Empire: A Historical Encyclopedia addresses a broader range of topics than do most other surveys of the empire, covering not only major political and military developments but also topics that have only recently come to serious scholarly attention, such as women's and gender history, art and architecture, indigenous histories and perspectives, and the construction of colonial knowledge and ideologies. By going beyond the "headline" events of the British Empire, this captivating work communicates the British imperial experience in its totality.

Download or read book The Hlubi Chiefdom in Zululand Natal written by John Britten Wright and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recorded oral history of the Hlubi goes back to an unspecified, semi-mythical time when, it is said, their ancestral chiefs lived near the Lubombo mountains, which lie along the eastern border of present-day Swaziland. About these chiefs nothing else is known, not even their names. Bryant, Stuart, and other researchers of the early 20th century recorded lists - some of them of great length - of supposed Hlubi chiefs (see Appendix), but none of these is reliable for the period before about the mid-18th century, when the Hlubi were already living on the upper Mzinyathi (Buffalo) river in what is now north-west Natal. The earliest recorded praises of their chiefs probably date from about the same period. For Knowledge of the remoter Hlubi past, the historian has to turn from oral traditions to the findings of archaeology.
