Book Landownership Characteristics and Investment in Soil Conservation

Download or read book Landownership Characteristics and Investment in Soil Conservation written by Donald Baron and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: Logit regression analyses of 1978 Resource Economic Survey data are performed to determine factors distinguishing farmland owners who invested in soil conservation practices from owners who did not invest. In most areas studied, owners who operated their land or who used share leases on land rented out were more likely to have invested than owners who rented out all land using only cash leases. The need for policies to encourage greater investment is suggested by evidence of trends toward increase in the percentage of all farmland that is owned by nonoperators and in the percentage of rental land that is farmed under cash leases.

Book Characteristics of Landowners Converting Land in the Western Great Plains 1975 77

Download or read book Characteristics of Landowners Converting Land in the Western Great Plains 1975 77 written by Ralph E. Heimlich and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: This study examines a comprehensive sample of farm and ranch landowners in seven Western Great Plains States. The sample is classified by land conversion activity between 1975 and 1977. More than 40,000 landowners (18 percent) in this area added cropland. The Northern Plains accounted for two-thirds of owners adding cropland. Operations adding cropland were of two types: new, expanding operations owned by younger, better educated, full-time farmers and established, speculative operations owned by older, less educated operators with a variety of nonfarm occupations. Soil erosion on land owned by those who converted land is little different than erosion on all land.

Book Family Farming

Download or read book Family Farming written by and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans decry the decline of family farming but stand by helplessly as industrial agribusiness takes over. The prevailing sentiment is that family farms should survive for important social, ethical, and economic reasons. But will they? This timely book exposes the biases in American farm policies that irrationally encourage expansion, biases evident in federal commodity programs, income tax provisions, and subsidized credit services. Family Farming also exposes internal conflicts, particularly the conflict between the private interests of individual farmers and the public interest in family farming as a whole. It challenges the assumption that bigger is better, critiques the technological basis of modern agriculture, and calls for farming practices that are ethical, economical, and ecologically sound. The alternative policies discussed in this book could yet save the family farm, and the ways and means of saving it are argued here with special urgency. ø This Bison Books edition includes a new introduction by the author providing a more national perspective, underscoring the repetitive cycles of American agriculture over the decade, and assessing the major policy issues that have dominated agriculture in recent years.
