Book Uncertainty and Forest Land Use Allocation in British Columbia

Download or read book Uncertainty and Forest Land Use Allocation in British Columbia written by Arlene Ells and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explains the concepts of fuzzy set theory and applies them to the problem of allocating public forest land on Vancouver Island among competing land uses. Two principal sources of fuzziness are identified: those related to uncertainty in classification (specification of management objectives) and those related to uncertainty concerning how actions affect objectives (imprecise technical coefficients). Comparing the results of classical and fuzzy decision models enables determination of which approach provides improved results, and which is more consistent with the political decision-making process in British Columbia.

Download or read book 1994 Forest Range Recreation Resource Analysis written by British Columbia. Ministry of Forests and published by University of British Columbia Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Columbia's Ministry of Forests Act requires a forest and range resource analysis to be completed every tenth year after September 30, 1984. This document is the third such analysis, presenting information relevant to current issues in provincial forest resource management as a foundation for developing future resource management policy. After an overview of the province's forest ecosystem, this report introduces important resource values associated with British Columbia forests. Inventories and statistics are provided on areas and volumes of timber harvested and regenerated, range condition and use, forest recreation activity, value of botanical forest products, and supply and demand for timber, range, and recreation resources. The report also describes the timber supply review process and how the annual allowable cut is determined. Finally, it describes provincial forest policy and programs and makes projections of future supply and demand of forest resources.

It contains direction that must be followed when preparing certain higher level plans and is intended for use by authorised decision-makers such as district managers and designated environmental officials. Sections of this summary cover plans in two categories: those directly enabled through Part 2 of the Act, including objectives for resource management zones, landscape units, and sensitive areas; and those developed under non-Code legislation or policy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many approaches to public advisory bodies have been applied in various land use planning contexts in British Columbia. This report reviews the experiences of the Ministry of Forests with these public advisory bodies and offers suggestions that may assist with the design and application of future public advisory/land use planning processes. It first discusses the Ministry's goals for its decision making and the role of public involvement in meeting those goals, such as fairness, efficiency, effectiveness, and planning outcomes. The report then describes the foundations for establishing and operating public advisory bodies and presents challenges that have arisen with regard to those bodies involved in land use planning. Issues discussed include the structure of public advisory bodies, the scope of an advisory process, support for advisory bodies, communications, and First Nations involvement.
