Book Land Use Change

Download or read book Land Use Change written by Richard J. Aspinall and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A presentation of spatial theories and methods that support an integrated approach to the analysis of land use change, this book addresses scientific issues such as the dynamics of change, integration and feedback between system elements, and scale issues in space and time. Focusing on spatial representation and modeling, it examines a series of case studies that demonstrate tropical and developing countries and changes in rapidly urbanizing areas. It also examines management issues such as requirements for improved decision-making in land management and the interpretation and communication of scientific knowledge for adaptive management.

Book Multiple sources of water for multiple purposes in northeast Thailand

Download or read book Multiple sources of water for multiple purposes in northeast Thailand written by Penning de Vries, F. and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2011-02-07 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many farms in tropical countries suffer from droughts in the dry season and sometimes even in the rainy season. In order to significantly increase the capacity to store water, the grassroots Farmer Wisdom movement in Northeast Thailand innovated pond construction on homesteads. This Working Paper first documents how pond water is mainly used to irrigate crops and fruit trees, and is also used for livestock or fish, and for domestic uses, even if ample piped water is available. Households were also found to harvest rainwater from roofs; take water from canals and streams; lift water manually from shallow wells and with electric pumps from deep wells; channel run-off from roads to paddy fields; use precipitation as green water on fields; and buy bottled water. Most households combine at least six of these nine water sources. The second part describes scenarios and some outcomes of a new simulation model, BoNam. This model provides guidelines for the optimal size and site of such ponds according to biophysical factors (weather, soil and crops), socioeconomic factors (prices, availability of labor and off-farm income) and household aspirations.

Book Assessment of land use changes in Mukdaham and Nakhon Phanom provinces NE Thailand by means of Remote Sensing

Download or read book Assessment of land use changes in Mukdaham and Nakhon Phanom provinces NE Thailand by means of Remote Sensing written by Nils Rennenberg and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2002-11-26 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Tropical land use changes, predominantly the clearing of tropical rain and monsoon forests, have long been recognized as a trend with dramatic consequences. FAO estimated the global loss of rain forest area at 0.6 to 0.9 % per annum in 1993. Most of it can be attributed to the conversion of forest lands to agricultural areas. In Southeast Asia, two countries have suffered from this phenomenon more than any other nations: the Philippines and Thailand. Between 1961 and 1975, the forest reserves of Thailand have been reduced from 57 % to 37 % of the total area, while at the same time the area put to agricultural use has almost doubled. Only a small part of that process was due to organized resettlement programmes; to an overwhelming extent the deforestation has been performed 'illegally' by spontaneous activities of the rural population. The share of forests further declined to 28.9 % in 1998, at a current rate of -0.7 % per year, meaning that Thailand's forest cover has roughly halved since 1960. The author of this thesis stayed as a visiting researcher at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), immediately north of Bangkok, for 6 months from November 2000 until April 2001. The AIT is a small international university for graduate studies with students and teachers from more than 40 countries. The core institution for this scientific cooperation was the Asian Center for Research on Remote Sensing (ACRoRS) of the AIT's School of Advanced Technologies (SAT). Field work in Northeast Thailand was carried out in two legs in February and April 2001. As an underlying principle of this study, it was attempted to incorporate problems from the realms of social as well as physical geography, i.e. to maintain a balance between questions of applied geography (regional studies) and remote sensing. This also means that no special focus was put on advanced RS methodology such as the development of new image processing techniques; the study is rather based on a somewhat holistic approach, joining aspects from many different fields of science as diverse as geology, geomorphology, climatology, agriculture and agricultural economics, sociology, ethnology, politics, and spatial planning. Accordingly, the basic objectives were: - to give a geographical description/characterization of the Northeastern Region of Thailand in terms of its physical properties as well as its social and economical peculiarities. - to try a quantification of forest [...]

Book excerpt: Changes in the use of land reflect a variety of environmental and social factors, necessitating an equally varied suite of data to be used for effective analysis. While remote sensing, both from satellites and air photos, provides a central resource for study, socio-economic surveys, censuses, and map sources also supply a wealth of valid informati
