Book Making the Great Book of Songs

Download or read book Making the Great Book of Songs written by Hilary Kilpatrick and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first systematic literary study of one of the masterpieces of classical Arabic literature, the fourth/tenth century Kitâb al-aghânî (The Book of Songs) by Abû I-Faraj al-Isbahânî. Until now the twenty-four volume Book of Songs has been regarded as a rather chaotic but priceless mine of information about classical Arabic music, literature and culture. This book approaches it as a work of literature in its own right, with its own internal logic and coherence. The study also consistently integrates the musical component into the analysis and proposes a reading of the work in which individual anecdotes and poems are related to the wider context, enhancing their meaning.

Book Contingency in a Sacred Law

Download or read book Contingency in a Sacred Law written by Baber Johansen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the Hanafite school of fiqh which originated in the eight century and is, geographically, the most widespread and, numerically, the most important representative of Muslim normativeness. The fiqh consists of liturgical, ethical and legal norms derived from the Islamic revelation. The introduction outlines the main boundaries between fiqh and theology and follows the modern debate on the comparison between the fiqh and the secularized law of the modern Occident. The core of the book is dedicated to the way in which the fiqh, in the period between the 10th and the 12th centuries, adapted to changing circumstances of urban and agricultural life (chapters I and II), to the way in which it marked off legal from ethical norms (chapter III), religious from legal status (chapters IV to VI) and legal propositions from religious judgment (chapter VII). The forms in which change of norms was made acceptable is discussed in chapter VIII. The last chapter deals with an attempt of Shi'i scholars in the Islamic Republic of Iran to answer new problems in old forms.

Book Islamic Thought in the Dialogue of Cultures

Download or read book Islamic Thought in the Dialogue of Cultures written by Hans Daiber and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islamic thought is the most beautiful result of a multicultural dialogue. Islamic culture became a bridge between antiquity, Iranian scholars, Syriac and Arabic Christians and the Latin Middle Ages. Its richness of ideas, its plurality of values can contribute to the requirements of modern plurality. The monograph aims at a historical and bibliographical survey of the qurʾānic and rational world-view of early Islam, of the period of translations from Greek into Syriac and Arabic, and of the impact of Islamic thought on the Latin Middle Ages. Critical reflexions of Muslim scholars stimulated new scientific ideas and make us aware of the contribution of Islam to humanity.

Book The Formation of the Classical Tafs r Tradition

Download or read book The Formation of the Classical Tafs r Tradition written by Walid Saleh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is both an introduction to the genre of classical tafsīr and a detailed study of one of its major architects, al-Thaʿlabī (d. 427/1035). The book offers a detailed study of the hermeneutical principles that governed al-Thaʿlabī's approach to the Qurʾān, principles which became the norm in later exegetical works. It is divided into three main sections; the first outlines the life and times of the author; the second is a detailed study of his major exegetical work, al-Kashf; the third charts a brief history of the genre of tafsīr through documenting the reactions of later exegetes to al-Kashf. This work brings together material never examined before and tries to offer a new way of understanding the history of classical Qurʾān exegesis.
