Book Russian migr s in the Intellectual and Literary Life of Interwar France

Download or read book Russian migr s in the Intellectual and Literary Life of Interwar France written by Leonid Livak and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a pioneering exploration of the intellectual and literary exchange between Russian émigrés and French intelligentsia in the 1920s and 1930s, Leonid Livak provides an impressively comprehensive bibliographic overview of a veritable "who's who" of Russian intellectuals and literati, listing all the material published by Russian émigrés or on topics pertaining to them during the period under study. Focusing attention on a largely ignored chapter of European cultural history, this volume challenges historical assumptions by demonstrating processes of cultural cross-fertilization and illuminates the precedents Russians set for political exiles in the twentieth century. A remarkable achievement in scholarship, Russian Émigrés in the Intellectual and Literary Life of Inter-War France is a valuable resource for admirers and researchers of French and Russian culture and European intellectual history.

Book Self Determination and Humanitarian Secession in International Law of a Globalized World

Download or read book Self Determination and Humanitarian Secession in International Law of a Globalized World written by Juan Francisco Escudero Espinosa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses questions in connection with the international legal regime on demands for secession, which have arisen in various States. More specifically, it examines the unilateral declarations of independence by Kosovo in 2008, and by Crimea and its subsequent annexation by the Russian Federation in 2014. The work investigates the two cases so as to shed light on the international legal regime affecting entities that are smaller than a sovereign State. It analyzes the relevant principles of international law, the intention being to determine their scope and review them in light of the most recent practice and developments in international law. In turn, the book examines and explains the events of relevance for international law that occurred in the changing situations in Kosovo and Crimea. On the basis of these legal considerations, it explores how the international community can respond when faced with situations that may violate international law, together with the effectiveness of various measures. It also discusses whether certain situations might be legitimate as a concept could now be emerging that secession may be justified in specific circumstances, such as serious and widespread violations of basic human rights.

Book In Search of Europe s Borders

Download or read book In Search of Europe s Borders written by Kees Groenendijk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Borders define territories within which identities and order are described and delineated. The triptych of indentities, borders and orders is central to understanding the nature of sovereignty and the relations between countries. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the European Union. The changing definition and placement of the border is one of the most striking features of the recent transformations of the Union. The definition of what a border is and where it is for persons has moved out of the territory of national sovereignty and has become the preserve in law of the European Community. The enlargement of the European Union towards the countries of Central and Eastern Europe has created new challenges for the concept of borders in the EU. This volume examines the extent of the Community power and the legal meaning of the EU's borders, as well as the ways to control (or not) the movement of persons across borders. It considers the legal texts - EC law on visas, the Regulations on visas, the meaning of borders for persons in Community Law, the Schengen acquis and its incorporation into the EC Treaty (and where appropriate the TEU); national practice and its transformation with the insertion of the private sector's responsibility for the control of borders and judicial control. The point of departure is the perspective of the individual who is seeking to cross these borders.

Book Les diasporas dans le monde contemporain

Download or read book Les diasporas dans le monde contemporain written by and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2006 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
