En pointillé se pose également la question de la place et de la fonction sociale du travail salarié dans l'organisation de la société réunionnaise. Dans ce contexte de chômage de masse, l'économie de transferts a joué un rôle essentiel dans le processus d'intégration des populations défavorisées issues de la société traditionnelle et rurale. Le Revenu minimum d'insertion en particulier, alloué à plus d'une famille sur quatre, a provoqué une profonde mutation du rapport à l'emploi pour ces populations qui, bien souvent, n'avaient alors le choix qu'entre le sous-emploi faiblement rémunéré et le chômage non indemnisé. Les pénuries de main-d'œuvre observées dans les plantations de canne à sucre sont, sur ce point, emblématiques de la transformation récente des rapports de travail dans la société créole. À partir d'une enquête ethnographique qu'il a menée au cours de plusieurs séjours dans l'île, Nicolas Roinsard montre ainsi - dans ce qu'il nomme une sociologie des réaffiliations - combien les revenus de transferts représentent pour un grand nombre d'individus un facteur d'autonomisation relative pouvant s'articuler avec les formes de solidarité traditionnelles, beaucoup plus qu'un symptôme ou un vecteur de désaffiliation et de dépendance. Le jeu des solidarités publiques et privées permet à la société réunionnaise de pallier les conséquences sociales de son chômage de masse en assurant l'intégration de toute une frange de la population exclue de la condition salariale.

Corpus is a work of literary force at once phenomenological, sociological, theological, and philosophical in its multiple orientations and approaches. In thirty-six brief sections, Nancy offers us at once an encyclopedia and a polemical program—reviewing classical takes on the “corpus” from Plato, Aristotle, and Saint Paul to Descartes, Hegel, Husserl, and Freud, while demonstrating that the mutations (technological, biological, and political) of our own culture have given rise to the need for a new understanding of the body. He not only tells the story of this cultural change but also explores the promise and responsibilities that such a new understanding entails. The long-awaited English translation is a bold, bravura rendering. To the title essay are added five closely related recent pieces—including a commentary by Antonia Birnbaum—dedicated in large part to the legacy of the “mind-body problem” formulated by Descartes and the challenge it poses to rethinking the ancient problems of the corpus. The last and most poignant of these essays is “The Intruder,” Nancy’s philosophical meditation on his heart transplant. The book also serves as the opening move in Nancy’s larger project called “The deconstruction of Christianity.”

Are Russian propaganda or "Fake news" entrepreneurs on Facebook undermining our sense of a shared reality? A conventional wisdom has emerged since the election of Donald Trump in 2016 that new technologies and their manipulation by foreign actors played a decisive role in his victory and are responsible for the sense of a "post-truth" moment in which disinformation and propaganda thrives. Network Propaganda challenges that received wisdom through the most comprehensive study yet published on media coverage of American presidential politics from the start of the election cycle in April 2015 to the one year anniversary of the Trump presidency. Analysing millions of news stories together with Twitter and Facebook shares, broadcast television and YouTube, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the architecture of contemporary American political communications. Through data analysis and detailed qualitative case studies of coverage of immigration, Clinton scandals, and the Trump Russia investigation, the book finds that the right-wing media ecosystem operates fundamentally differently than the rest of the media environment. The authors argue that longstanding institutional, political, and cultural patterns in American politics interacted with technological change since the 1970s to create a propaganda feedback loop in American conservative media. This dynamic has marginalized centre-right media and politicians, radicalized the right wing ecosystem, and rendered it susceptible to propaganda efforts, foreign and domestic. For readers outside the United States, the book offers a new perspective and methods for diagnosing the sources of, and potential solutions for, the perceived global crisis of democratic politics.
