Download or read book L criture du bonheur dans le roman contemporain written by Ruth Amar and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the ages, the pursuit of Happiness has been at the heart of the needs and desires each individual would seek to fulfill, while as a concept, Happiness has always resonated strongly in poetic as well as philosophical, sociological and psychological contexts. But what about Happiness today, in a world dominated by technology, driven by productivity and dictated by efficiency? Does Happiness still feature in contemporary fiction in any significant way? Or has it perhaps gone underground, adopting different guises? Would we still call that “duty of happiness” that Pascal Bruckner saw as “present at the second half of the twentieth century” a relevant force today? Or has it waned perceptibly? The articles brought together in this volume seek to work out answers to these and similar questions, creatively addressing the imminent risks but also eagerly following up the intriguing possibilities one encounters when interrogating Happiness in the contemporary novel. Originally based on an international conference organized at the University of Haifa, Israel, in May 2010, the volume is structured around the axes we found useful as a basis for the various approaches towards Happiness in Europe and the historical and social events that influenced the writing of Happiness as they defined the 20th century and have impacted on the 21st: the Holocaust, the Soviet dystopia, consumerism, postmodernism, “everyday life,” the various as yet unarticulated new modes of life they have given rise to, and so on. A new writing of happiness then? At the very least this volume targets the contemporary novel without wanting to solidify works, instead taking into account the fluctuations Happiness has been subjected to, and the diversity and especially the paradoxes it has created, while we have been keen to preserve a “precise” reading of the texts and have felt compelled to respect and preserve the particular features that make the writings of the authors we focus on stand out.

Book Georges Brassens and Jacques Brel

Download or read book Georges Brassens and Jacques Brel written by Chris Tinker and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the various personal and social narratives within the songs of Brassens and Brel, the auteurs-compositeurs-interpretes who epitomised what is now widely regarded as the golden era of chanson francaise during the 1950s and 60s. Tinker's discussion reveals the tensions in thenarrators' relationship with themselves, other individuals, and society. The book builds upon, and moves beyond, the two dominant critical approaches used to write about French song: the exclusively biographical oriented approach and the purely linguistic analysis. Tinker focuses both on identity, viewed primarily as a relational process, and on representation: linguistic, musical, vocal, and gestural.

Book Decouvertes a Travers La Meditation

Download or read book Decouvertes a Travers La Meditation written by Julien Bouchard and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book The Age of Conversation written by Benedetta Craveri and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, an award-winning look at French salons and the women who presided over them In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, between the reign of Louis XIII and the Revolution, French aristocratic society developed an art of living based on a refined code of good manners. Conversation, which began as a way of passing time, eventually became the central ritual of social life. In the salons, freed from the rigidity of court life, it was women who dictated the rules and presided over exchanges among socialites, writers, theologians, and statesmen. They contributed decisively to the development of the modern French language, new literary forms, and debates over philosophical and scientific ideas. With a cast of characters both famous and unknown, ranging from the Marquise de Rambouillet to Madame de Sta‘l, and including figures like Ninon de Lenclos, the Marquise de Sevigne, and Madame de Lafayette, as well as Pascal, La Rochefoucauld, Diderot, and Voltaire, Benedetta Craveri traces the history of this worldly society that carried the art of sociability to its supreme perfection–and ultimately helped bring on the Revolution that swept it all away.

Book Convergences and Interferences

Download or read book Convergences and Interferences written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one imagine plurality? How does one find new strategies for writing diversity and polyphony? How does one read the most challenging creative and critical works of the present time? This bi-lingual volume of twelve English and eight French papers proposes to breach linguistic critical frontiers by placing careful analysis of texts from different language traditions in a multi-lingual and multi-cultural dialogue. In this collection of theoretically and politically aware close readings of contemporary cultural production, the focus of analysis rests on the multiple and complex global convergences and interferences of cultural influences. The collection foregrounds the work of innovative writers who seek to express the ungraspable presence of cultural “newness” at the same time as situating themselves in the richness of detail of local lives. This volume, most particularly, finds a balance of critical approach between the everyday attempts at negotiation and survival, and the insight brought to the reader by postcolonial, syncretic and feminist theoretical analysis.

Book Amour et Raison L Appel de l Enfance

Download or read book Amour et Raison L Appel de l Enfance written by Ernst Delma and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Blast Corrupt Dismantle Erase

Download or read book Blast Corrupt Dismantle Erase written by Brett Josef Grubisic and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do literary dystopias reflect about the times? In Blast, Corrupt, Dismantle, Erase, contributors address this amorphous but pervasive genre, using diverse critical methodologies to examine how North America is conveyed or portrayed in a perceived age of crisis, accelerated uncertainty, and political volatility. Drawing from contemporary novels such as Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, and the work of Margaret Atwood and William Gibson (to name a few), this book examines dystopian literature produced by North American authors between the signing of NAFTA (1994) and the tenth anniversary of 9/11 (2011). As the texts illustrate, awareness of and deep concern about perceived vulnerabilities—ends of water, oil, food, capitalism, empires, stable climates, ways of life, non-human species, and entire human civilizations—have become central to public discourseover the same period. By asking questions such as “What are the distinctive qualities of post-NAFTA North American dystopian literature?” and “What does this literature reflect about the tensions and contradictions of the inchoate continental community of North America?” Blast, Corrupt, Dismantle, Erase serves to resituate dystopian writing within a particular geo-social setting and introduce a productive means to understand both North American dystopian writing and its relevant engagements with a restricted, mapped reality.

Book Philosophical Hermeneutics and Islamic Thought

Download or read book Philosophical Hermeneutics and Islamic Thought written by Sylvain Camilleri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the methodological issues raised by the encounter between Islamic thought and contemporary philosophical hermeneutics. It features essays that examine why and how current Muslim thinkers refer to Continental philosophy. The contributors put the universality of the hermeneutic order to the test with three different approaches. The first looks at exegetical aspects. It addresses contemporary thinkers from the Islamicate world who have engaged critically or not with main representatives or key concepts of philosophical hermeneutics. The second presents an interpretative analysis. The essays here present attempts at using philosophical hermeneutics in order to develop new interpretations of canonical or traditional ensembles of texts such as the Qur’an and the Hadith as well as legal, spiritual, and philosophical corpuses from the Islamicate world. The third looks at different political and critical issues. The clear and sound reference to religion of Islamic thought makes its entanglement with philosophical hermeneutics a burning challenge for all parties involved. Is it true, as some contend, that philosophical hermeneutics can help interpret Islamic thought anew? This book reveals how the two philosophies are likely to expand each other’s horizons and influence each other’s conceptual frameworks. It features revised papers from an International Conference.
