Assia Djebar s'efforce de recueillir inlassablement les paroles des femmes, leurs luttes tenaces pour la conservation de la vie et de modeler la langue française pour inscrire en elle tant au niveau des structures des récits, de l'interaction entre passé et présent, entre l'ici algérien et l'ailleurs français, entre le récit historique et le monologue intérieur ou les bribes autobiographiques, l'identité plurielle qui s'esquisse au fil des romans à la fois comme vécu historique et expériences de vies. L'identité plurielle algérienne pourrait constituer le creuset de son unité nationale, à condition de tolérer la différence comme modalité de l'enrichissement de sa culture et de se l'approprier. Assia Djebar inscrit son travail littéraire dans cette perspective inaugurale. Son oeuvre romanesque constitue dans le paysage littéraire francophone une réponse originale à tout réductionnisme identitaire.

Book excerpt: Le terme "autobiographie" revient souvent dans le discours critique sur les ouvrages algériens qui utilisent la première personne. C'est tout d'abord cette idée reçue qu'il a semblé utile d'interroger. En effet, si première personne il y a, elle désigne davantage un collectif, "nous", qu'un individu particulier. En étudiant les problèmes posés par le nom propre, le genre du livre, le regard du narrateur sur son personnage, le rapport au lecteur, il apparait qu'il y a pour le moins ambiguïté sur le caractère simplement autobiographique de ces ouvrages. Dès lors, une autre question vient à l'esprit : et si l'utilisation d'une troisième personne, plus neutre, plus objective, autorisait une meilleure vue sur soi-même. Chez certains auteurs qui ont utilisé les deux formes d'écriture, c'est paradoxalement en utilisant le "il" (ou le "elle") que le personnage, en tant qu'individu, parvient au premier plan. Or il apparait qu'un pan important de la littérature algérienne - et plus généralement maghrébine - joue sur l'ambiguïté suivante : parler de soi, mais de manière indirecte, sans l'avouer. Pourquoi ? Plusieurs considérations peuvent être avancées ici : des problèmes liés à la religion ou à la politique, des questions relatives à l'identité. Pour comprendre le phénomène, il est sans doute plus opérant de comparer les œuvres algériennes à résonances autobiographiques avec notre 18eme siècle - où s'affirment et l'autobiographie et le roman qu'avec la littérature européenne contemporaine. Ce détour par le passé permet d'analyser pourquoi le brouillage de la typologie occidentale traditionnelle est constitutif de la littérature algérienne et fait partie de ce processus de métissage qui la rend si originale.

Through astute discussions of various texts, Peter Dunwoodie maps the representation of Algeria both in the dominant nineteenth-century discourse of Orientalism, via the littérature d'escale of writers such as Gautier or Fromentein, and in the colonial writing of Louis Bertrand, Robert Randau, and the `Algerianists' who played a critical role in the construction of the new `Algerian'.
