Book Syria and Lebanon Under the French Mandate

Download or read book Syria and Lebanon Under the French Mandate written by Idir Ouahes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French rule over Syria and Lebanon was premised on a vision of a special French protectorate established through centuries of cultural activity: archaeological, educational and charitable. Initial French methods of organising and supervising cultural activity sought to embrace this vision and to implement it in the exploitation of antiquities, the management and promotion of cultural heritage, the organisation of education and the control of public opinion among the literate classes. However, an examination of the first five years of the League of Nations-assigned mandate, 1920-1925, reveals that French expectations of a protectorate were quickly dashed by widespread resistance to their cultural policies, not simply among Arabists but also among minority groups initially expected to be loyal to the French. The violence of imposing the mandate 'de facto', starting with a landing of French troops in the Lebanese and Syrian coast in 1919 - and followed by extension to the Syrian interior in 1920 - was met by consistent violent revolt. Examining the role of cultural institutions reveals less violent yet similarly consistent contestation of the French mandate. The political discourses emerging after World War I fostered expectations of European tutelages that prepared local peoples for autonomy and independence. Yet, even among the most Francophile of stakeholders, the unfolding of the first years of French rule brought forth entirely different events and methods. In this book, Idir Ouahes provides an in-depth analysis of the shifts in discourses, attitudes and activities unfolding in French and locally-organised institutions such as schools, museums and newspapers, revealing how local resistance put pressure on cultural activity in the early years of the French mandate.

Book Nationalism and Imperialism in the Hither East

Download or read book Nationalism and Imperialism in the Hither East written by Hans Kohn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1932, Nationalism and Imperialism in the Hither East seeks to present the history of Turkey, Egypt and Arabia in the decade where the political structures created by World War I and the Peace Conferences sought consolidation and the evolution of their own life. The story begins where, after the immediate consequences of the War had been liquidated, the civil and political administration of the several countries was established. This book is intended as contribution to the endeavour to understand the historical and sociological character of nationalism and of the forces which are determining the history of our own day. The social, political, and cultural movements in these countries, the struggle between imperialism and nationalism throw light upon the processes which extend far beyond the region under consideration. The language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this republication. This book will be of interest to students of history, political science, international relations, and geography.

Book The History of French Colonial Policy 1870 1925

Download or read book The History of French Colonial Policy 1870 1925 written by Stephen H. Roberts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1963: The author gives a clear and accurate account of the immense development of France as a colonial power which, in an incredibly short space of time, was to control one third of Africa. He drew his material not only from the scanty formal literature then available, but also by carefully evaluating and selecting from large mass of controversial material to be found in deliberate propaganda, parliamentary debates, and the often suspect offical documentation.

  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book An Occasion for War written by Leila Tarazi Fawaz and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leila Fawaz's pioneering study tells the story of the 1860 civil wars that began in Mount Lebanon and spilled over into Damascus. This period witnessed the most severe outbreak of sectarian violence in the history of Ottoman Syria and Lebanon. The author's close analytical narrative of the dramatic events of that year is set against the broader themes of nineteenth-century social, political, and economic change. Fawaz shows how social conflict, including "ethnic" civil wars, cannot be explained without analyzing the regional and international currents that play upon both central state power and local autonomy. She also demonstrates the important role of the communal balance between social and political institutions within regions. Fawaz's new insights into the formation of sectarian identities and conflict will make An Occasion for War essential reading for all students of the modern Middle East.
