Book excerpt: Anything is possible in installation art. The typically short lifespan of the materials and techniques used and the intended experience can be endless, often to the despair of the custodian of the work. The processes involved in preserving this complex form of art, reinstalling it, finding ways to recreate the experience over and again, as well as the decisionmaking that underlies these processes, form the backbone of this book. What did the artist originally intend and how has that concept been realised in the past? How can one preserve and document the installation? What relation exists between the components and the space, and what is the spectator's part in the work? Questions of this kind are examined in connection with a number of case studies. At the same time, it reports on the results of an extensive research project Inside Installations (2004-2007) carried out by an international group of custodians active in the conservation of contemporary art. Tatja Scholte is programme manager at the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE) and specialised in the theory of contemporary art conservation. Dr. Glenn Wharton serves as Media Conservator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He is also on faculty in the Museum Studies Program at New York University, and was the founding Executive Director of INCCA-NA, the North American group of the International Network for the Conservation of Contemporary Art. Book A os 30

  • Author : Jordana Mendelshon
  • Publisher : Fbrica
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 436 pages

Download or read book A os 30 written by Jordana Mendelshon and published by Fbrica. This book was released on 2012 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1930s was a turbulent decade across the world with the rise of totalitarian governments, the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, the start of World War II, and the constant migration of artists as part of evolving social, economic and political geographies that were marked by utopian dreams and devastating upheavals. This book approaches the 1930s and seeks to explore the microhistories that detail the movement of artists across borders, the potential transformation of artistic styles and the concurrent struggle to preserve old networks amidst the creation of new communities in often radically new contexts of artistic production. Touching on the works of Cartier-Bresson, Max Ernst, Miro, Picasso, and many more, as well as examining aspects of Surrealism, Abstraction, propaganda and photography, this is an insightful account of one of the most turbulent decades in the history of art.

The author focuses on the application of color science to the solution of practical problems, providing a comprehensive discussion of the nondestructive spectrophotometric tools and techniques used to understand the color and appearance of materials during the technical examination of works of art. The book, which features numerous examples of reference reflectance spectra, can help prevent misinterpretation of color measurements and the erroneous conclusions that might result. Topics include spectrophotometry, colorimetry, colorant mixtures, analytical techniques, reflection, fluorescence, and the effects of extenders, fillers, and inerts.

Book Experiments Past

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jodi Reeves Flores
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2014
  • ISBN : 9789088902512
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Experiments Past written by Jodi Reeves Flores and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Experiments Past the important role that experimental archaeology has played in the development of archaeology is finally uncovered and understood. Experimental archaeology is a method to attempt to replicate archaeological artefacts and/or processes to test certain hypotheses or discover information about those artefacts and/or processes. It has been a key part of archaeology for well over a century, but such experiments are often embedded in wider research, conducted in isolation or never published or reported. Experiments Pasts provides readers with a glimpse of experimental work and experience that was previously inaccessible due to language, geographic and documentation barriers, while establishing a historical context for the issues confronting experimental archaeology today. This volume contains formal papers on the history of experimental methodologies in archaeology, as well as personal experiences of the development of experimental archaeology from early leaders in the field, such as Hans-Ole Hansen. Also represented in these chapters are the histories of experimental approaches to taphonomy, the archaeology of boats, building structures and agricultural practices, as well as narratives on how experimental archaeology has developed on a national level in several European countries and its role in encouraging a wide-scale interest and engagement with the past.
