Book excerpt: El término «crisis» es un término contemporáneo, formulado en una época histórica determinada, con una precisa fecha de caducidad. La historiografía lo ha utilizado de forma abusiva cuando se ocupa del estudio de la Baja Edad Media. Como se evidencia en esta monografía, la expresión «crisis de la Baja Edad Media» no deja de ser una «construcción historiográfica» que se formula durante la primera mitad del siglo xx. Es más adecuado utilizar términos como «desarrollo», «transformación» o «cambio» para definir los procesos que afectaron a la vida de las mujeres y los hombres bajomedievales. Siempre que se producen «transformaciones» o «cambios» profundos en un momento de la historia, las y los medievalistas nos remitimos al pasado buscando elementos para entenderlos, y utilizamos con frecuencia conceptos y términos actuales para el estudio de aquel pasado. Por ello, y para evitar equívocos, debemos definirlos con precisión y tener presentes las realidades y experiencias históricas de la época que estudiamos. La búsqueda de comprensión en la Edad Media para entender el presente es una búsqueda recurrente. El terme «crisi» és un terme contemporani, formulat en un període històric determinat i, per tant, amb una data de caducitat ben precisa. La historiografia l'utilitza de forma abusiva quan s’ocupa de l’estudi de la baixa edat mitjana. Com es posa de manifest en aquesta monografia, l’expressió «crisi de la baixa edat mitjana» no deixa de ser una «construcció historiogràfica» bastida al llarg de la primera meitat del segle xx. Per definir els processos que van afectar la vida de les dones els i homes de la baixa edat mitjana, és més adequat utilitzar termes com «desenvolupament», «transformació» o «canvi». Quan en un moment de la història es produeixen «transformacions» o «canvis» importants, les i els medievalistes dirigim la mirada al passat buscant elements per entendre’ls, i sovint utilitzem conceptes i termes actuals en l'anàlisi d’aquell passat. Per això, i per tal d’evitar equívocs, els hauríem de definir amb precisió. Hem de tenir present, doncs, les realitats i les experiències històriques de l’època que estudiem. La cerca de comprensió en l’edat mitjana per entendre el nostre present és una recerca recurrent. The term "crisis" is a contemporary term, formulated in a particular historical period, with a precise expiry date. Historiography has used abusively when it deals with the study of the Middle Ages. As evidenced in this paper, the term "crisis of the late Middle Ages" no longer a "historiographical construction 'which is formulated in the first half of the twentieth century. It is more appropriate to use terms like "development", "transformation" or "change" to define the processes that affect the lives of women and men bajomedievales. Whenever "transformations" or deep "changes" occur in a moment of history, and medievalists refer to the past looking elements to understand and use concepts frequency and current terms for the study of that past. Therefore, and to avoid misunderstandings, we must define precisely and be aware of the realities and historical experiences of the period we studied. The search for understanding in the Middle Ages to understand this is a recurring search.

The theory of the three estates made clear distinctions between the functions of the two estates which comprised the elite of medieval society: the oradores (ecclesiastics) and the defensores (warriors or nobility).They had different lifestyles, clothing and ways of thinking about life. With regard to death, the responses dictated by Christian theology conflicted with the demands of the defensor ideology, based on the defence of individual honour, the pursuit of fama and the display of earthly power. This book charts the progress of the dying from their preparations for death, through their 'good' or 'bad' deaths, to their burials and otherworldly fates and also analyses the responses of the bereaved. Through the use of pre-fifteenth-century texts it is possible to demonstrate that the conflict between the orador and defensor ideologies did not begin in the fifteenth century, but rather had a much older origin, and it is suggested that the conflict continued after 1500. Textual sources include the Siete partidas, wills, chronicles, religious works such as the Arte de bien morir and literary works such as Cárcel de Amor and Celestina.
