Un vasto número de investigaciones, desde diversos marcos teóricos y epistemológicos, han estudiado esta cuestión y señalado que, mediante mecanismos sutiles y prácticasinstitucionalizadas, la escuela produce o contribuye a la reproducción de la desigualdad social. Sin embargo, frente a los resultados que la investigación arroja, en el discurso político y pedagógico se mantiene vigente la apuesta a la igualdad educativa. ¿Qué sostiene la expectativa? En el marco de esas preocupaciones, en este estudio la pregunta se dirige a la escuela como lugar posible para la experiencia de la igualdad. Con el propósito de explorarestrategias, acciones y/o prácticas cotidianas que puedan habilitarla, se ha adoptado un enfoque de investigación narrativo. Desde esta perspectiva, se ha recurrido a directores de escuelas quienes han relatado a partir de su experiencia las formas, los modos en que se configuran procesos institucionales y colectivos en torno a la igualdad. Siguiendo los relatos, esta tesis reconoce que los directores, para hacer lugar a la experiencia de la igualdad en laescuela, en primer lugar realizan una operación de deconstrucción de la gramática escolar y de las reglas tácitas sobre las que se organiza la actividad cotidiana. Luego, o al mismo tiempo, hacen un trabajo político: sostenidos en el oficio de la palabra, buscan construirconsenso en torno a prácticas institucionales centradas en la confianza, la responsabilidad y la enseñanza.

Book excerpt: Based on twenty case studies of universities worldwide, and on a survey administered to leaders in 101 universities, this open access book shows that, amidst the significant challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, universities found ways to engage with schools to support them in sustaining educational opportunity. In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as "ivory towers" being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach

The claim in this book is that first-hand research experiences with families allow one to document this competence and knowledge, and that such engagement provides many possibilities for positive pedagogical actions. Drawing from both Vygotskian and neo-sociocultural perspectives in designing a methodology that views the everyday practices of language and action as constructing knowledge, the funds of knowledge approach facilitates a systematic and powerful way to represent communities in terms of the resources they possess and how to harness them for classroom teaching. This book accomplishes three objectives: It gives readers the basic methodology and techniques followed in the contributors' funds of knowledge research; it extends the boundaries of what these researchers have done; and it explores the applications to classroom practice that can result from teachers knowing the communities in which they work. In a time when national educational discourses focus on system reform and wholesale replicability across school sites, this book offers a counter-perspective stating that instruction must be linked to students' lives, and that details of effective pedagogy should be linked to local histories and community contexts. This approach should not be confused with parent participation programs, although that is often a fortuitous consequence of the work described. It is also not an attempt to teach parents "how to do school" although that could certainly be an outcome if the parents so desired. Instead, the funds of knowledge approach attempts to accomplish something that may be even more challenging: to alter the perceptions of working-class or poor communities by viewing their households primarily in terms of their strengths and resources, their defining pedagogical characteristics. Funds of Knowledge: Theorizing Practices in Households, Communities, and Classrooms is a critically important volume for all teachers and teachers-to-be, and for researchers and graduate students of language, culture, and education.
