  • Author : Susan Niditch
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 1995-06-29
  • ISBN : 0195356918

Download or read book War in the Hebrew Bible written by Susan Niditch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-06-29 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texts about war pervade the Hebrew Bible, raising challenging questions in religious and political ethics. The war passages that readers find most disquieting are those in which God demands the total annihilation of the enemy without regard to gender, age, or military status. The ideology of the "ban," however, is only one among a range of attitudes towards war preserved in the ancient Israelite literary tradition. Applying insights from anthropology, comparative literature, and feminist studies, Niditch considers a wide spectrum of war ideologies in the Hebrew Bible, seeking in each case to discover why and how these views might have made sense to biblical writers, who themselves can be seen to wrestle with the ethics of violence. The study of war thus also illuminates the social and cultural history of Israel, as war texts are found to map the world views of biblical writers from various periods and settings. Reviewing ways in which modern scholars have interpreted this controversial material, Niditch sheds further light on the normative assumptions that shape our understanding of ancient Israel. More widely, this work explores how human beings attempt to justify killing and violence while concentrating on the tones, textures, meanings, and messages of a particular corpus in the Hebrew Scriptures.

Book L Am rique Dieu et la guerre

Download or read book L Am rique Dieu et la guerre written by Stanley Hauerwas and published by Bayard Culture. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

  • Author : Dave Andrews
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2015-05-29
  • ISBN : 1498217753
  • Pages : 189 pages

Download or read book The Jihad of Jesus written by Dave Andrews and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-05-29 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are caught up in the cycle of so-called "holy wars." In The Jihad of Jesus, Dave Andrews argues that while this inter-communal conflict is endemic, it is not inevitable. Depending on our understanding, our religions can be either a source of escalating conflict or a resource for overcoming inter-communal conflict; and for our religions to be a resource for overcoming conflict, we need to understand the heart of all true religion as open-hearted compassionate spirituality. In the light of an open-hearted compassionate spirituality, we can reclaim the word "jihad" from extremists who have (mis)appropriated it as a call to "holy war," and reframe it, in truly Qur'anic terms, as a "sacred nonviolent struggle for justice"; and we can reconsider Jesus, as he is in the Gospels, not as a poster boy for Christians fighting crusades against Muslims, but as "a strong-but-gentle Messianic figure" who can bring Christians and Muslims together. As this book shows, many Christians and Muslims have found Isa (Jesus) and the Bismillah (celebrating the mercy, grace, and compassion of God) as common ground upon which they can stand and work for the common good. The Jihad of Jesus is a handbook for reconciliation and action: a do-it-yourself guide for all Christians and Muslims who want to move beyond the "clash of civilizations," join the jihad of Jesus, and struggle for justice and peace nonviolently side by side.

Book D masquer la violence

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michel Lafouasse
  • Publisher : Editions L'Harmattan
  • Release : 2019-05-02
  • ISBN : 2140120639
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book D masquer la violence written by Michel Lafouasse and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 2019-05-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book War and the American Difference

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are American identity and America's presence in the world shaped by war, and what does God have to do with it? Esteemed theologian Stanley Hauerwas helps readers reflect theologically on war, church, justice, and nonviolence in this compelling volume, exploring issues such as how America depends on war for its identity, how war affects the soul of a nation, the sacrifices that war entails, and why war is considered "necessary," especially in America. He also examines the views of nonviolence held by Martin Luther King Jr. and C. S. Lewis, how Jesus constitutes the justice of God, and the relationship between congregational ministry and Christian formation in America.

Book War Peace and the Bible

    Book Details:
  • Author : Vaughn CroweTipton
  • Publisher : Nextsunday Resources
  • Release : 2015-01-14
  • ISBN : 9781936347315
  • Pages : 80 pages

Download or read book War Peace and the Bible written by Vaughn CroweTipton and published by Nextsunday Resources. This book was released on 2015-01-14 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1986 film, The Mission, Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro play the central characters in a saga about the church, a mission, and a native people. Irons plays Father Gabriel, who is committed to nonviolence. De Niro plays Rodrigo Mendoza, a former warrior haunted by his sin and now a faithful follower of the Church. The film documents their tension-filled yet deep relationship. In the end, both have to make a decision as the mission where they live and work is scheduled for destruction and relocation. Father Gabriel chooses nonviolence to combat the forces of evil; Mendoza chooses to fight for the rights of the natives. Most of us don't need Hollywood to bring the issues of war and peace home for us. As people of faith, we are faced daily with our participation in violent actions, our willingness to allow violence in the world to continue, and our response to violence in our lives. The Bible does not give us an easy answer. Sometimes we hear ancient Israel on its march through the promised land. Other times we hear Jesus unwilling to raise a hand against those who persecuted and ultimately killed him. There are days when we can side with the psalmist, who lashes out in anger against his enemies. Other times, we know Jesus was right that we should not return violence for violence, that we must pray for our enemies, and that we must love even those who do not love us. How can we do these things? Is there a place for war and violence in our faith? As you read, study, and contemplate these sessions, take time to look deeply within yourself. Although it is difficult, self-examination can enable our learning and activate our engagement with the world and our faith.

  • Release : 2009-12-01
  • ISBN : 1441207988

Download or read book The War of the Lamb written by John Howard Yoder and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Howard Yoder was one of the major theologians of the late twentieth century. Before his death, he planned the essays and structure of this book, which he intended to be his last work. Now two leading interpreters of Yoder bring that work to fruition. The book is divided into three sections: pacifism, just war theory, and just peacemaking theory. The volume crystallizes Yoder's argument that his proposed ethics is not sectarian and a matter of withdrawal. He also clearly argues that Christian just war and Christian pacifist traditions are basically compatible--and more specifically, that the Christian just war tradition itself presumes against all violence.

Download or read book Christians and Violence written by Jean Lasserre and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-11-14 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This marks the first English translation of renowned peace theologian Jean Lasserre's seminal work on non-violence. With introductory remarks from Frédéric Rognon and the author's daughter, Christiane Lasserre, this book provides English readers a window into a powerful, yet accessible, text on Christian ethics. In this classic essay, Lasserre turns to the problem of physical violence and murder, tackling it with a focus on morality and scripture. Writing in the aftermath of the Second World War and the Algerian War, Lasserre also deftly examines the ethics of military violence and warfare. The Church told men for years that one could be an honourable Christian and a solider; this book delves into the two opposing realities of this sentiment with a powerful case for pacifism.

Book Axis of Peace

    Book Details:
  • Author : S. Wesley Ariarajah
  • Publisher : World Council of Churches
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 158 pages

Download or read book Axis of Peace written by S. Wesley Ariarajah and published by World Council of Churches. This book was released on 2004 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war in Iraq is over, and we are now facing its aftermath. The searching and divisive questions raised for the churches by the invasion of Iraq linger on. Are there "just wars"? What does the Bible teach about war and violence? What constitutes patriotism when one's nation is at war? Is there theological justification for wars of self-defence or liberation? S. Wesley Ariarajah explores these questions to facilitate ongoing conversation in faith communities. Surveying instances of violence in many regions of the globe, often involving confrontation between religious communities, Ariarajah examines what violence does to those who perpetrate it on others. Moving beyond simplistic notions of 'good' and 'evil' in world affairs, he calls on peoples of faith to counter terror in all its forms through the creation of an 'axis of peace'.
