C'est dans ce bassin versant que l'Etat Centrafricain va décider de construire en amont des deux usines d'exploitation hydroélectrique un barrage de retenue d'eau de capacité de 253 millions de m3, pour résoudre le problème d'alimentation en électricité de la ville de Bangui en toute saison. Après la mise en eau du barrage en 1991, l'impact du barrage dans le bassin versant a notablement modifié l'environnement physique et social. L'étude vise à montrer l'état actuel du fonctionnement du barrage après dix ans, les transformations des différents milieux à l'aide de recherches, des enquêtes sur le terrain et de quelques traitements d'image de satellite et, enfin de décrire le comportement de la population et de leurs activités économiques qui sont exercées autour du barrage et du lac. L’intérêt de ce travail permet de mettre en vue l'importance des impacts et les risques encourus si un programme de surveillance et de suivi n'est pas scrupuleusement consignés.
