Book Cost Planning of PFI and PPP Building Projects

Download or read book Cost Planning of PFI and PPP Building Projects written by Abdelhalim Boussabaine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This topical and timely book presents and innovative approach to dealing with the complexities of cost planning in PFI. PFI/PPP projects have a significantly different costing environment from conventionally procured projects, requiring cost analysts to use their expertise and innovative thinking to develop whole-life cost solutions that deliver value for money to the client, thus improving public building assets performance. Abdelhalim Boussabaine provides a thorough grounding in the theory of PFI, from its early evolution through to examples of current projects. In particular, the rationale for private financing of public services, arguments for and against PFI and 'value for money' mechanisms are discussed. The book presents an innovative framework for whole-life value and calls for changes in the way whole life cycle value is perceived, created and exchanged. Cost Planning of PFI and PPP Building Projects provides the reader with existing knowledge as well as present innovative thinking for future development and management of PFI/PPP cost planning processes. Given the importance and novelty of this book, academics, professionals, undergraduate and postgraduate students will find this book valuable.

Book Jean Baptiste Say and Political Economy

Download or read book Jean Baptiste Say and Political Economy written by Jean-Baptiste Say and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Baptiste Say (1767–1832) was one of the first great economists to have laid down the foundations of economic science. Author of the famous Treatise on Political Economy in 1803, which was revised and re-edited on several occasions, he published numerous other works including a voluminous Complete Course in Practical Political Economy in 1828–9. He also taught political economy successively from 1815 until his death in three Parisian establishments: the Athénée, the Conservatory of Arts and Trades, and the Collège de France. The texts in which Say exposes his approach to political economy have not been available in the English language until now except for the fourth edition of the ‘Preliminary Discourse’ which serves as an introduction to the Treatise. This book presents a translation which renders his works accessible to the English speaking world. For the first time, English readers will be able to become directly immersed in Say’s principal texts, where he develops his conception of political economy. Jean-Baptiste Say and Political Economy proposes a translation of a selection of eleven of Say’s texts. The first three are versions of the ‘Preliminary Discourse’ from the Treatise’s editions of 1803, 1814 and 1826 with the variations of the editions of 1817, 1819 and 1841. The following four texts are the opening discourses pronounced at the Conservatory in 1820 and 1828 and the Collège de France in 1831 and 1832. The eighth text is the ‘General Considerations’ which open the Complete Course in Practical Political Economy of 1828, with the variations of the 1840 re-edition. The final three texts are those Say devotes to ‘the progress of political economy’ in what is akin to a history of economic thought. This volume is of great importance to economic historians and people studying Jean-Baptiste Say, as well as those who are interested in economic theory and philosophy and political economy.

Blending theory and empirical analysis, the book contains chapters on each of the main western European cases and on a number of other less-studied ones. The editors also integrate a valuable analysis of the environmentally-degraded Czech Republic, where the Green parties' lack of electoral success has puzzled many observers.

Book Shamanism and Violence

Download or read book Shamanism and Violence written by Davide Torri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proposing a new theoretical framework, this book explores Shamanism’s links with violence from a global perspective. Contributors, renowned anthropologists and authorities in the field, draw on their research in Mongolia, China, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, India, Siberia, America, Papua New Guinea, Taiwan to investigate how indigenous shamanic cultures dealt, and are still dealing with, varying degrees of internal and external violence. During ceremonies shamans act like hunters and warriors, dealing with many states related to violence, such as collective and individual suffering, attack, conflict and antagonism. Indigenous religious complexes are often called to respond to direct and indirect competition with more established cultural and religious traditions which undermine the sociocultural structure, the sense of identity and the state of well-being of many indigenous groups. This book explores a more sensitive vision of shamanism, closer to the emic views of many indigenous groups.

Book Debating the Democratic Legitimacy of the European Union

Download or read book Debating the Democratic Legitimacy of the European Union written by Beate Kohler-Koch and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2007-04-18 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discussion about a constitution for the European Union and its rejection by referendum in two of the EU founding member states has once again spurred public and scholarly interest in the democratic quality and potential of the European Union. Debating the Democratic Legitimacy of the European Union brings together distinguished thinkers from law, political science, sociology, and political philosophy to explore the potential for democratically legitimate governance in the European Union. Drawing on different theoretical perspectives and strands from democratic theory, this volume is the first of its kind to overcome the present state of fragmentation in the debate about the conditions and possible remedies for what is often called the "democratic deficit" of the European Union. Among the pressing questions addressed by the contributors are: What future is there for parliamentary democracy in the European Union? Can we observe the evolution of a European public sphere and civil society? Can participatory democracy or deliberative democracy pave the road for a democratically legitimate European Union? Conversations about democracy have engaged the public in a new way since the beginning of the Iraq war, and this volume is the best resource for students and readers who are interested in democracy in the European Union. Contributions by: Rudy B. Andeweg, Katrin Auel, Arthur Benz, Lars-Erik Cederman, Damian Chalmers, Deirdre Curtin, Donatella Della Porta, Klaus Eder, Erik O. Eriksen, Ulrich Haltern, Hubert Heinelt, Doug Imig, Christian Joerges, Beate Kohler-Koch, Christopher Lord, Paul Magnette, Andreas Maurer, Jeremy Richardson, Berthold Rittberger, Rainer Schmalz-Bruns, Michael Th. Book Managing Overseas Construction Contracting

Download or read book Managing Overseas Construction Contracting written by D. A. Langford and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1995 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, more and more clients are seeking to procure construction work on a global basis; designers from one country, contractors from another, materials and subcontractors from yet others. In such a complex multi-organisational and cross-cultural setting, the management of the construction environment and process is likely to create a formidable challenge. Managing overseas construction contracting addresses these challenges and provides practical guidance on the best approaches to take to ensure the best results. The book will be of benefit and interest to all professional practitioners in construction and finance who are currently involved in, or planning to be involved in, overseas construction. It will also be of particular interest to undergraduates and graduates with an interest in overseas construction, who are specialising in the built environment, development economics or project management. The book has been divided into five parts, with each part addressing a particular element of the international construction process: Part I analyses the range of stakeholders that a company will need to satisfy. This includes both internal stakeholders - such as employees) and external stakeholders - such as subcontractors and suppliers). Part II explores the marketing process. This section has been broken down into three themes: marketing strategy, market evaluation and marketing tactics. Part III looks at the task necessary in the successful execution of the construction project. It begins by reviewing the project plan and how the diverse resources of labour, subcontractors, plant, equipment and materials are procured, brought to site and incorporated into the works. This section also looks at project management including, how staff are motivated, how quality is maintained and how safe working is assured. Part IV takes stock of the process of international contracting by reviewing the characteristics of firms which operate in overseas settings. Part V provides two in-depth case studies which describe the project processes involved in the construction of a major irrigation scheme and a massive port development.

Book Strategic Management in Construction

Download or read book Strategic Management in Construction written by David Langford and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the general theory of strategy, relates it to the particular circumstances of the construction industry, and shows how it can be applied in practice. It brings together ideas from economics, marketing, management, business and politics to develop strategic management for both contractors' firms and the associated professions. Substantial changes have occurred in the industry since the book was first published in 1991. This Second Edition reflects the major developments that have followed the Latham and Egan reports, and includes new chapters on international strategy and marketing, showing how they can contribute to the strategic planning of construction organizations. The book will provide a valuable tool for the strategic development of construction firms. "Ten years separate the editions during which period a significant number of British, (and other), construction firms which had survived generations of proprietors merged, changed beyond recognition or ceased trading. One can not but wonder if publication of a work on strategic planning some twenty year earlier might have saved some of them." Construction Manager "The book presents the essential elements for managing at this higher level and should be a must for any construction professional who aspires to an executive position in industry as well as any student for construction management, project management and organizational management in construction. It comes highly recommended" Engineering, Construction and Architectural Management
