Book excerpt: Ce projet vise à développer une station formatrice avec patients standardisés/simulés permettant à l'étudiant une confrontation pratique avec la réalité d'un choix éthique. Sur la base d'une situation clinique éthique, l'étudiant dialogue avec un patient standardisé. Une grille d'observation évaluant les compétences pratiques de l'étudiant durant l'entretien (organisation de l'entretien, communication, véracité, empathie) a été développée et est remplie par les patients standardisés. Huit étudiants sur 80 ont volontairement participé au projet. Dans les questions d'examen écrites sur l'éthique médicale, les huit étudiants volontaires ont obtenu des résultats similaires au 72 étudiants suivant la filière classique. Les compétences pratiques évaluées par la grille d'observation ne corrélaient pas avec les résultats obtenus à l'examen écrit. En conclusion, ce projet a permis de développer une station formatrice avec patients standardisés/simulés permettant à l'étudiant une confrontation avec la réalité éthique humaine et d'évaluer une dimension pratique non comprise dans les questions d'étique écrites.

Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently. The terminology was strongly debated by the participants and, as is frequently suggested in this book, awaits fuller clarification.

One assumes that progress is concerned primarily with recent developments whilst history deals with matters of the past. However, in the past there has also been considerable progress in the development of our understand ing of paediatric surgical problems, otherwise we would not have pro gressed to our present achievements. The editors, therefore, do not apologize for compiling this volume but, on the contrary, feel that the publication of this volume is most timely. Modern paediatric surgery has now been practised for three genera tions. The handful of pioneers who were the founders of our specialty worked mainly before the last world war. A few dozen of the inter mediary generation started work immediately after the war, while the new generation who are now dominating our specialty must be counted in thousands. Two factors have radically altered paediatric surgery as practised by the intermediary and the present generation of surgeons.
