Pourtant aucune étude n'a évalué spécifiquement leur besoin et leur accès aux soins orthodontiques en France. L'objectif est d'évaluer la demande et les différents facteurs influençant l'accès aux soins orthodontiques des enfants et adolescents en situation de handicap scolarisés en Établissement Régional d'Enseignement Adapté (EREA) français via un questionnaire. Celui-ci a été conçu et distribué par courriel aux tuteurs des élèves. 82 questionnaires ont été retournés complets provenant de 3 EREA. 44% des répondants avaient déjà consulté un orthodontiste, seuls 31,5% avaient une demande d'ordre esthétique et/ou fonctionnelle. Au total : 28% avaient commencé un traitement orthodontique. Les principales raisons de non traitement évoquées étaient : l'absence de besoin, le report du traitement, le manque de structure adaptée et le coût. L'accessibilité aux soins orthodontiques des jeunes en situation de handicap varie en fonction de leur âge, de leur scolarité et du type de handicap. Le pourcentage de traitement est légèrement supérieur à celui de la population générale du même âge.
