Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Little Schools of Port-Royal Schools' Commission and the vigorous onslaughts of Herbert Spencer's Essay on Education. The history of French education presents a very different picture. There is a series of school reformers and educational writers, stretching almost continuously from the time of the Re naissance down to our own days. More than this, the reformers, unlike so many of their English brethren, Often made their influence felt; while many of the writers on education (though there are Obvious exceptions) set forth in an attractive manner views of great practical value to those engaged in the work of teaching. It is at times hard to set great store by some Of our Classical English educational treatises; they too frequently savour Of being mere second-rate by-products of men of genius whose chief interests lay elsewhere. When reading Milton's Tractate we seem to have the Rabelaisian curriculum for Gargantua set forth in all seriousness as meet, not for a giant in a fairy-tale, but for an English schoolboy - though of special aptitude, it is true. Locke's Thoughts on Education are more practical and teem with common sense; but the plan Of the book is incoherent, the same thing is Often repeated several times, and the reader wearies long before he reaches the end. Spencer's Essay on Education is full of interest and is attractively written; but it lacks in philosophic analysis and tends at times to degenerate into a mere party pamphlet. Those of our educational writers who were most in touch with school-realities are too little known; Ascham certainly borrows some fame from his con nection with Queen Elizabeth, but who, save the specialist, reads Brinsley or Mulcaster? Book excerpt: Just seven months into the Civil War, a Union fleet sailed into South Carolina’s Port Royal Sound, landed a ground force, and then made its way upriver to Beaufort. Planters and farmers fled before their attackers, allowing virtually all their major possessions, including ten thousand slaves, to fall into Union hands. Rehearsal for Reconstruction, winner of the Allan Nevins Prize, the Francis Parkman Prize, and the Charles S. Sydnor Prize, is historian Willie Lee Rose’s chronicle of change in this Sea Island region from its capture in 1861 through Reconstruction. With epic sweep, Rose demonstrates how Port Royal constituted a stage upon which a dress rehearsal for the South’s postwar era was acted out.

Book excerpt: A study of the conscious shaping of memory within the community known as Port-Royal in seventeenth-century France, whose members thought that memory could contribute to the new ideas which they had about education. Concentrating on memoirs in the first chapter and on various educational treatises in the second, Hammond explores many previously unknown works. Port-Royal was to a large extent responsible for producing two of the greatest writers of the age, Blaise Pascal and Jean Racine; Hammond devotes a chapter to each. The role of memory in the persuasive process of Pascalʼs Pensées is shown to be vital to a full understanding of the work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Port-Royal Education: Saint-Cyran; Arnauld; Lancelot; Nicole; De Saci Guyot; Coustel; Fontaine; Jacqueline Pascal The Petites Écoles of Port-Royal had but a short and troubled existence. Their foundation goes hack to the year 1637, but their real organization only dates from 1646. Several times broken up in consequence of theological disputes excited by Arnauld, or because of the war of the Fronde, they were finally closed by the king's command in March, 1661. They hold, nevertheless, an honourable place in the history of pedagogy. If they lasted but a short time they shed a brilliant light, and exercised, as much by the character and talents of the masters as by the reform in methods of teaching and the books which they produced, a considerable influence, which on certain points is still active. The first idea of their foundation belongs to the illustrious Duvergier de Hauranne, abbe of Saint-Cyran.
