Book Transfer and Interference in Language

Download or read book Transfer and Interference in Language written by Monika Brüggemeier and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1984 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of this bibliography in its broadest sense is the subject of a wide range of academic disciplines. Given these circumstances, the particular associations and connotations of the terms 'transfer' and 'interference' in each of these areas are legion, with resultant differences in meaning in the disparate literature on these subjects. And yet it is, in one way or another, contact and interaction of languages in the speaker/hearer and learner, in language acquisition contexts, as well as in society in general, which is basic to these two concepts throughout the various disciplines. The discovery of this basic unitary notion is surely one of the reasons for the new interest in these phenomena. In light of all this, a bibliography cannot at present avoid being highly/ selective in order to demarcate an interdisciplinary area of research in its own right and with its own status. The establishment of such an area is one of our main aims. The focus of interest in this bibliography, admittedly, is directed towards the psycholinguistics of language contact and interaction.

Book Language Minorities and Human Rights

Download or read book Language Minorities and Human Rights written by Fernand de Varennes and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most vexing issues in many of the world's so-called ethnic or minority conflicts is the question of language use by the State and its citizens. While international and national law has traditionally viewed language preference to be within a State's prerogative - at least when involving governmental activities and machinery - this position has proved to be a continuous source of acrimony and conflict, and wrong in some respects. Language, Minorities, and Human Rights is the most complete book ever written on the topic, providing for the first time an analysis of every aspect of language and the law. In addition to presenting a theoretical model for language's particular position and relevance in human rights, it constitutes an invaluable reference document by including the provisions of close to 100 international, multilateral and bilateral instruments involving language rights, as well as the constitutional provisions of 140 countries dealing with language. By addressing little explored areas such as the language rights of indigenous peoples, non-citizens and even the use of script, in addition to more traditional topics such as nationalism and language, freedom of expression and non-discrimination, Language, Minorities and Human Rights proposes a complete descriptive picture of language and human rights as well as proposing a number of suggestions on how to address and balance the many problems currently caused by the linguistic demands of various individuals and the interests of states in nation building.

Book Le Franc ais Populaire and French as a Second Language

Download or read book Le Franc ais Populaire and French as a Second Language written by Virginia Lynn Kenemer and published by International Center for Research on Bilingualism = Centre international de recherche sur le bilinguisme. This book was released on 1982 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French of English speaking students of French as a second language is compared with "francais populaire" (FP) in order to determine similarities in their tendency toward simplified grammar and morphology. Simplifying characteristics that are typical of FP were obtained from French working class sources, while simplification patterns of French as a second language were drawn from 100 compositions written by university students enrolled in intermediate level French courses. Simplification errors found in the student compositions are classified according to corresponding grammatical traits of FP, including general morphology and syntax, articles, substantives, adjectives, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, and prepositions. Research on language simplification processes, data collection and analysis methods, and pedagogical implications are discussed. The data analysis shows that speakers of FP and American students of French employ simplification systems that are similar in many respects. (RW)

Book A Practical Application of a Study of Errors of College Francophone Students Learning English

Download or read book A Practical Application of a Study of Errors of College Francophone Students Learning English written by Louise Godin and published by Centre international de recherche sur le bilinguisme = International Center for Research on Bilingualism. This book was released on 1982 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research on which this study is based found that 50% of the errors in English of French-speaking students were due to interlingual causes and 50% had their source within the target language itself. The question of a correlation between the errors and the teaching method used is explored. Five methods are discussed and evaluated: grammar-translation, direct, audiolingual, transformational grammar, and cognitive code. In each case, a correlation is made of the method with varieties and frequency of errors, and the value of elements of the method is noted. Other pedagogical implications are drawn from the study of the frequency of errors for fifteen types of errors, chosen as representatives of important classes of grammar or as general trouble makers. Rank-ordered lists are provided as well as tables and graphs illustrating the relative frequency of the errors. Some of the conclusions are that negative transfer is an important source of errors and that, with regard to intralingual errors, overgeneralization seems to be the most common cause. To reduce errors of all types and promote communication and fluency, an eclectic method is suggested. It is also noted that some errors persist on all levels even after many years of study. (AMH)

Book The Relationship Between the Use of Communication Strategies and Aspects of Target Language Proficiencies

Download or read book The Relationship Between the Use of Communication Strategies and Aspects of Target Language Proficiencies written by Tahereh Paribakht and published by International Center for Research on Bilingualism = Centre international de recherche sur le bilinguisme. This book was released on 1984 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four hypotheses are addressed concerning the relationship of the types and proportion of strategies adopted by the subject groups to the proficiency levels, and the subjects' rate of success and effective use of communication strategies for conveying intended meaning as they relate to proficiency level in the target language. The subjects were 40 Persian students in Canada at two distinct proficiency levels, and 20 native English speakers as a comparison group. Communication skills were elicited by a concept-identification task using concrete and abstract nouns, and involving both oral production and interaction between members of the two groups. A taxonomy of communication strategies was developed, with classification into four communicative approaches (linguistic, contextual, conceptual, and mime) based on the type of knowledge used by the speaker for their adoption. Results also showed that differences between groups in the adoption of communication approach types were minimal except in the relative frequency of use of some strategies, and that the groups differed in success rate at getting meaning across and in their effective use of strategies to communicate abstract concepts. It is concluded that use of communications strategies and target language proficiency level are related, use of communication strategies is dynamic, and that differing surface realizations of speakers' communication skills cumulatively affect success in conveying meaning.
