Book Iconicity in Language

Download or read book Iconicity in Language written by Raffaele Simone and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the spectrum of possibilities in linguistic theory construction is much broader and more variegated than students of linguistics have perhaps been led to believe, the Current Issues in Linguistic Theory (CILT) series has been established in order to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of linguistic opinions of scholars who do not necessarily accept the prevailing mode of thought in linguistic science. CILT is a theory-oriented series which welcomes contributions from scholars who have significant proposals to make towards the advancement of our understanding of language, its structure, functioning, and development. Current Issues in Linguistic Theory is especially designed, by offering an alternative outlet for meaningful contributions to the current linguistic debate, to furnish the community of linguists the diversity of opinion which a healthy discipline must have.

Download or read book Clinical Linguistics written by Elisabetta Fava and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers different aspects of speech and language pathology and it offers a fairly comprehensive overview of the complexity and the emerging importance of the field, by identifying and re-examining, from different perspectives, a number of standard assumptions in clinical linguistics and in cognitive sciences. The papers encompass different issues in phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, discussed with respect to deafness, stuttering, child acquisition and impairments, SLI, William's Syndrome deficit, fluent aphasia and agrammatism. The interdisciplinary complexity of the language/cognition interface is also explored by focusing on empirical data from different languages: Bantu, Catalan, Dutch, English, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish. The aim of this volume is to stress the growing importance of the theoretical and methodological linguistic tools developed in this area; to bring under scrutiny assumptions taken for granted in recent analyses, which may not be so obvious as they may seem; to investigate how even apparently minimal choices in the description of phenomena may affect the form and complexity of the language/cognition interface.

Book Assessment of Plurilingual Competence and Plurilingual Learners in Educational Settings

Download or read book Assessment of Plurilingual Competence and Plurilingual Learners in Educational Settings written by Silvia Melo-Pfeifer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-27 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses contemporary issues in the assessment of plurilingual competence and plurilingual learners. Offering theoretical and practical lenses, it contributes towards an integrated and holistic assessment of plurilingual competence and plurilingual learners. The book provides both theoretical considerations and empirical approaches around how the specificities of plurilingual learners can be considered when assessing their various competences. It covers topics relating to learners in a variety of plurilingual settings: from the education of adult immigrants, assessment of young refugees and assessment of students in school and university, to the assessment of plurilingual competence in foreign language education. Showcasing a wide range of international authors, the book provides cutting-edge research in the domain of multilingual foreign, second and heritage language assessment, and assessment of content knowledge of plurilingual students. It bridges the gap between the fields of language policies and practices, research on plurilingual competence, and assessment in language education. Providing new insights into a crucial and contentious issue, this volume will be an essential reading for researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of educational language policies, applied linguistics and multilingualism, in particular those involved in the assessment of plurilingual competence.

Book Processability Approaches to Second Language Development and Second Language Learning

Download or read book Processability Approaches to Second Language Development and Second Language Learning written by Jörg-U. Keßler and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental issue in second language acquisition research and in applied linguistics is the question of how learners acquire a second language. Today it is general knowledge that any second language learning follows certain, theoretically established and empirically supported developmental sequences. Based on Processability Theory (Pienemann 1998 and 2005) one can diagnose current states of individual learners' second language development. Knowing about the path of second language development provides important insights into what learners are ready to acquire in the second language at a given point in time. This can support second language learning both in natural and instructional settings. Pienemann's Processability Theory (PT) provides a well researched and empirically substantiated framework to explain the developmental sequences in second language learning across languages.Taking Pienemann (1998 and 2005) as the point of departure the chapters of this book apply, test and extend PT. The book is organised in four parts, (I) Introduction, (II) Current Theoretical Issues within the PT Framework, (III) Applying PT to the Second Language Classroom, and (IV) Work in Progress within the PT Framework.

Book Ecology of Language Acquisition

Download or read book Ecology of Language Acquisition written by J.H. Leather and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume emphasizes the emergence of linguistic development through children's and learners' interactions with their environment - spatial, social, cultural, educational - bringing to light commonalities between primary language development, child and adult second-language learning, and language acquisition by robots. The studies presented here challenge a number of dominant ideas in language acquisition theory. It is of interest to language acquisition researchers and professionals.

Book Information Structure and its Interfaces

Download or read book Information Structure and its Interfaces written by Lunella Mereu and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-02-26 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume presents recent results in the field of Information Structure based on research on Italian and Italian dialects, and on further studies on several typologically different languages. The central idea is that Information Structure is not an exclusive matter of syntax but an interface issue which involves the interplay of at least the phonological, morpho-syntactic and semantic-pragmatic levels of analysis. In addition, the volume is based on the study of actual language use and it adopts a cross-linguistic point of view.

Book Third language acquisition

Download or read book Third language acquisition written by Camilla Bardel and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the phenomenon of third language (L3) acquisition. As a research field, L3 acquisition is established as a branch of multilingualism that is concerned with how multilinguals learn additional languages and the role that their multilingual background plays in the process of language learning. The volume points out some current directions in this particular research area with a number of studies that reveal the complexity of multilingual language learning and its typical variation and dynamics. The eight studies gathered in the book represent a wide range of theoretical positions and offer empirical evidence from learners belonging to different age groups, and with varying levels of proficiency in the target language, as well as in other non-native languages belonging to the learner’s repertoire. Diverse linguistic phenomena and language combinations are viewed from a perspective where all previously acquired languages have a potential role to play in the process of learning a new language. In the six empirical studies, contexts of language learning in school or at university level constitute the main outlet for data collection. These studies involve several language backgrounds and language combinations and focus on various linguistic features. The specific target languages in the empirical studies are English, French and Italian. The volume also includes two theoretical chapters. The first one conceptualizes and describes the different types of multilingual language learning investigated in the volume: i) third or additional language learning by learners who are bilinguals from an early age, and ii) third or additional language learning by people who have previous experience of one or more non-native languages learned after the critical period. In particular, issues related to the roles played by age and proficiency in multilingual acquisition are discussed. The other theoretical chapter conceptualizes the grammatical category of aspect, reviewing previous studies on second and third language acquisition of aspect. Different models for L3 learning and their relevance and implications for representations of aspect and for potential differences in the processing of second and third language acquisition are also examined in this chapter. As a whole, the book presents current research into third or additional language learning by young learners or adults, considering some of the most important factors for the complex process of multilingual language learning: the age of onset of the additional language and that of previously acquired languages, social and affective factors, instruction, language proficiency and literacy, the typology of the background languages and the role they play in shaping syntax, lexicon, and other components of a L3. The idea for this book emanates from the symposium Multilingualism, language proficiency and age, organized by Camilla Bardel and Laura Sánchez at Stockholm University, Department of Language Education, in December 2016.

Book Understanding Second Language Processing

Download or read book Understanding Second Language Processing written by Bronwen Patricia Dyson and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to help researchers and teachers interested in language processing and Processability Theory (PT) to understand this theory and its applications. PT is an influential account of second language processing which hypothesizes that, due to the architecture of language processing, learners acquire second languages in developmental stages. This book lays out PT’s predictions and research on the development of diverse target languages – particularly English and Scandinavian languages – by learners of various categories. It discusses the typological issues facing PT and its contribution to an understanding of variation and cognitive constraints on pedagogy. However, the book also raises a critical eye to the literature which, after almost twenty years of evolution, requires explanation, clarification and, in some cases, extension. Why do some phenomena belong to different stages in different languages? Why are important types of variation under-represented? Is teaching as constrained as proposed in PT?

Book Structuring Variation in Romance Linguistics and Beyond

Download or read book Structuring Variation in Romance Linguistics and Beyond written by Mirko Grimaldi and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current theoretical approaches to language devote great attention to macro- and micro-variation and show an ever-increasing interest in minority languages. In this respect, few empirical domains are as rich and lively as the Italo-Romance languages, which together with Albanian were the main research domain of Leonardo M. Savoia. The volume covers areas as different as phonology, morphology, syntax and the lexicon. A broad range of Romance languages is considered, as well as Albanian, Greek and Hungarian, shedding new light on many classical topics. The first section focuses on morphosyntax, both in the narrow sense and with regard to its interfaces. The second section focuses on clitics and pronouns. The third section deals with a number of issues in phonology and syntax-phonology interface. The last section turns the reader’s attention beyond formal linguistics itself and examines variation in the light of neurosciences, pathology, historical linguistics and political discourse.
