Cette evolution a conduit les divers intervenants en entreprise (ergonomes, psychologues ou sociologues du travail) a se poser de nouvelles questions, theoriques et methodologiques: comment analyser et conceptualiser cette part langagiere du travail? Quelles methodes mettre en oeuvre pour comprendre son statut et le role qu'elle joue dans l'organisation et dans la realisation des taches? Cette evolution a aussi incite de nombreux specialistes des sciences du langage a aborder la question du travail, et a tenter de rendre compte des conditions de fonctionnement du langage dans ces situations particulierement complexes, fortement determinees et mobilisant des registres semiotiques divers. Le present ouvrage se propose de fournir un reflet et un bilan intermediaire des travaux accomplis dans ces nouvelles perspectives. Emanant de specialistes de la psychologie du travail, de la didactique professionnelle, de l'ethnomethodologie, de la linguistique interactionnelle ou encore de l'analyse du discours, les contributions qui y sont rassemblees se rejoignent sur deux ambitions communes. D'une part, la volonte de contribuer a une meilleure comprehension des conditions de l'activite reelle des travailleurs; ce qui implique la conduite de recherches in situ (et non plus en laboratoire) dans les divers champs professionnels: industrie, agriculture, services, institutions scolaires, dispositifs de formation professionnelle, etc. D'autre part, le souci d'articuler ces travaux aux reflexions theoriques et methodologiques plus generales ayant trait au statut des actions humaines, a celui de pratiques langagieres et au role que les unes et les autres jouent dans le developpement personnel comme dans le developpement professionnel. L'ouvrage s'adresse aux intervenants, chercheurs et formateurs relevant des sciences du travail ou des sciences du langage. Il s'adresse aussi aux etudiants se destinant a ces disciplines et plus largement a tous ceux que preoccupe le statut de la femme et de l'homme au travail.

Learning for occupations, and the educational and practice-based experiences supporting it are the subject of increased interest and attention globally. Governments, professional bodies, workplaces and workers are now looking for experiences that support the initial and ongoing development of occupational capacities. Consequently, more attention is being given to workplaces as sites for this learning. This focus on learning through work has long been emphasised in the Francophone world, which has developed distinct traditions and conceptions of associations between work and learning. These include ergonomics and professional didactics. Yet, whilst being accepted and of long standing in the Francophone world, these conceptions and traditions, and the practices supporting them are little known about or understood in the Anglophone world, which is the dominant medium for scientific and educational discussion. This book addresses this problem through drawing on accounts from France, Switzerland and Canada that make accessible and elaborate these traditions, conceptions and practices through examples of their applications to occupationally related learning. Book excerpt: This books arises from the observation that mainstream psychology, especially work and organisational psychology (WOP), suffers from critical limitations in its attempts to deal with the complexities of work as a cultural phenomenon. We can only mention a few examples here. In the WOP field, especially in Anglo- Saxon tradition, work experiences are seen through the lenses of traditional behavioural approaches, whereas culture is seen as a ‘software of the mind’, to use a popular definition found in this field (based on cross-cultural mainstream psychology). ‘Competences’, to take another example, are thought of as something that do or do not people have inside them. Suffering, like stress (a common work-based problem of our times), is considered to be dependent on a person’s personality, perceptions or as a set of behaviours triggered by facing an ‘objective’ environment. Even meaning-making process can be found to be defined from a WOP mainstream point of view: meanings are ‘social cognitions’ shared by people by means of unidirectional socialisation processes. Therefore, the goal of this book is to deliver to the reader a new and challenging theoretical and methodological tool box, inspired by insights developed from a broad cultural psychological perspective. Its focus is on the consideration of work and organisations based on core concepts developed inside cultural psychology. Therefore, it is designed to discuss potential extensions of these concepts to work psychology.
