Book excerpt: South African Traditional Medicinal Plants from KwaZulu-Natal is based on the beautiful notebooks that the Norwegian medical doctor Henrik Greve Blessing wrote when he was visiting the KwaZulu-Natal district in the years 1901 -1904. Blessing was the medical doctor on board the ship "Fram" that went towards the North Pole with Fridtjof Nansen during the years 1893-96. In these notebooks he described 98 plants, both botanically and with their local use for illnesses, pains and as agents against poisoning. For most plants the only names given were the Zulunames. The last part of this book is a facsimile of Blessing's original notebooks. Scientists from Norway and South Africa have identified the plants, taken photographs of them, and described the use of the plants traditionally as well as modern knowledge about effects. The book is both of cultural, medicinal and pharmaceutical historic interest, and represents part of the historic relations between South Africa and Norway --

Download or read book Nature Tourism Conservation and Development in Kwazulu Natal South Africa written by Bruce A. Aylward and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication considers environmental, social and economic issues concerning the development of nature tourism. Using KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa as a case study, it highlights the benefits and trade-offs in promoting and managing sustainable nature tourism development, and examines how to promote the objectives of economic growth, poverty reduction and conservation. Three key issues are explored: the need to move beyond development of a wildlife industry to the creation of a true nature tourism economy that supports biodiversity; the role of the private sector in achieving equitable development and job creation while generating conservation finance; and alternative pricing and other market mechanisms to encourage the growth and economic viability of nature tourism.

Download or read book Chota Motala written by Goolam H. Vahed and published by University of Kwazulu Natal Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chota Motala, medical doctor, family man, and political activist, lived out over eight decades of his life in communities that preceded, and ultimately succeeded, the hegemony of formal apartheid in South Africa. For most of this time, Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu-Natal, was home to Motala, who helped to shape the politics of the Midlands and whose legacy is vibrantly woven into the city. Pietermaritzburg spawned strong alliances between trade unions, political organisations and communities that cut across race, class and religious lines. This book examines Motala's intellectual project and activism from his childhood years through to his role as an ambassador in the new South Africa, and throws light on poorly documented episodes in Pietermaritzburg's history. Goolam Vahed is a professor of History at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. His previous works, published with UKZN Press include: Chatsworth: The Making of a South African Township (co-edited with Ashwin Desai) 2012 and Schooling Muslims in Natal Identity, State and the Orient Islamic Educational Institute (co-written with Thembisa Waetjen) 2015.
Download or read book Urban Tourism in the Developing World written by Gustav Visser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decade, the field of urban tourism has consolidated with the appearance of several books that concentrate upon the Western European and North American experience. Recently, the scope and range of urban research has widened considerably, including the welcome appearance of studies that examine the tourism phenomenon in cities outside the Euro-American heartland.Despite this growing international body of debate and scholarship on tourism and cities, particularly in the developed North, literature that relates to the developing world as a whole, and to Africa in particular, remains sparse. The task of Urban Tourism in the Developing World: The South African Experience is to augment the current international scholarship concerning urban tourism in the developing world. More especially, the contributors draw attention to a range of case studies from South Africa that provide some starting points to address the uneven scholarly coverage of urban tourism the African context has received to date. In addition, the research material presented here seeks to contribute toward raising the South African, and indeed the African profile, within growing international scholarship concerning issues of urban tourism and development. This collection aims to expand an emerging South African and African tourism research "voice" concerning the tourism and development nexus, as well as to stem critiques that this body of research appears to have developed in a theoretical vacuum, divorced from broader international tourism research discourses. This collection of essays not only further develops an independent South African tourism perspective, but also presents research that is closely tied to international urban tourism research debates. In addition, this analysis of urban tourism in the South African context enriches the rather Western-oriented theories of urban tourism discourse through its emphasis on how urban tourism is evolving in urban Africa.
Download or read book AIDS Intimacy and Care in Rural KwaZulu Natal written by Patricia C. Henderson and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how HIV/AIDS became part of the lives of the people of the mountainous Okhahlamba in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. Based on extensive research in the area between 2003 and 2006, the author shows what impact the disease had - and still does - for adults and children, and the different ways people tried to find answers to the devastating presence of HIV / AIDS. Henderson focuses on informal care by family members and volunteers at a time when anti-retroviral drugs were not yet available. She also shows what it meant to the community once the drugs became available.

Download or read book The Eight Zulu Kings written by John Laband and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Eight Zulu Kings, well-respected and widely published historian John Laband examines the reigns of the eight Zulu kings from 1816 to the present. Starting with King Shaka, the renowned founder of the Zulu kingdom, he charts the lives of the kings Dingane, Mpande, Cetshwayo, Dinuzulu, Solomon and Cyprian, to today's King Goodwill Zwelithini whose role is little more than ceremonial. In the course of this investigation Laband places the Zulu monarchy in the context of African kingship and tracks and analyses the trajectory of the Zulu kings from independent and powerful pre-colonial African rulers to largely powerless traditionalist figures in post-apartheid South Africa.
